A Cuban residing in Uruguay returned to the island as a surprise after nearly three years and recorded the reunion with his family in a video that went viral on TikTok, amassing over 407,100 views within a few hours.

The clip, published on Wednesday by the user @yankielers —identified as a Cuban doctor who emigrated to Uruguay— shows the protagonist walking backward down a paved street in a rural area of Cuba, pulling two suitcases. The overlay text on the screen says it all: "After almost three years / I went as a surprise in search of that hug."

The most emotional moment comes when the young man shouts "Mom!" upon arriving at his family's house, unleashing hugs, tears, and shouts of surprise that were captured on video.

The author himself described the moment in the post: "Thank you, God, for allowing those hugs; they were just a few days ago, and I already need them again. Only those families who have had to separate know what it feels like."

The reaction on social media was immediate and massive. The video has garnered 48,100 likes, over 4,300 comments, and 1,247 shares. Dozens of users admitted to having cried while watching it.

"The word 'mami' from a child returning to their mother's arms always sends shivers down the spine," someone wrote in the comments. "Oh my God, I cried; those cries touched my soul," reacted another person. Another user commented: "I am crying, I am Cuban in Peru; I know what that feels like." "Those who have their mother far away understand perfectly the value of this moment. There are surprises that are worth a lifetime," said another.

This video is not an isolated case. The surprise reunions of Cuban émigrés with their families have become a sustained viral trend on TikTok. Last Monday, another video showed Cubans arriving as a surprise and the reaction of their relatives sparked a similar response on social media.

And in April, a young Cuban defied airport rules to embrace his family in a reunion that moved thousands.

Behind each of these videos lies a devastating reality: more than 1.4 million Cubans left the island between 2020 and 2024, driven by the economic crisis, chronic blackouts, and the political repression of the regime. Nearly 11% of the Cuban population currently resides abroad, and as of 2023, 38% of Cuban families had at least one member living outside the country.

Psychologists specializing in Cuban migration describe the physical absence of emigrants as an emotional void that generates anxiety and guilt in the family members who remain on the island. Remittances alleviate the economic situation but do not compensate for the emotional loss.

That’s why these videos resonate so deeply. As one user wrote in the comments: "This is how I hope to return for that hug from my mom."
