A 45-year-old man of Cuban nationality was arrested on Monday after attempting to rob a jewelry store at gunpoint in the Can Parellada neighborhood of Terrassa, Barcelona, after several neighbors rushed at him and physically restrained him before he could escape.
The incident occurred around eight in the evening, just before closing time, at a store on Europa Street. According to the local outlet Catalunya Press, the individual burst into the establishment armed with a firearm and began to intimidate the owner to obtain jewelry and cash from the register.
During the assault, the suspect struck the jeweler with the weapon, causing minor injuries.
Several witnesses in the vicinity witnessed the scene and immediately reacted, rushing towards the assailant and restraining him at the scene, preventing him from taking anything or escaping from the establishment, reported ElCaso.com.
After the call to the emergency number 112, several patrols from the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Municipal Police of Terrassa arrived at the scene and apprehended the suspect at the site of the attempted robbery.
The case is now in the hands of the Divisió d'Investigació Criminal de los Mossos, which has initiated proceedings to precisely reconstruct how the robbery occurred and to determine if the arrested individual acted alone or had support from others, and whether it could be linked to other similar incidents.
The owner of the jewelry store has already given a statement to the Catalan police and confirmed what happened.
This is not the first case in which a Cuban resident in Spain has been arrested for a violent crime. In May 2025, a Cuban was arrested as a member of a gang dedicated to theft in the country. In October of the same year, another Cuban was detained in Madrid following a fatal assault in the district of Puente de Vallecas.
The robbery in Terrassa is part of a wave of violent thefts at jewelry stores in Catalonia during the spring of 2026. On April 27, several armed individuals burst into a jewelry store in Roda de Ter, in the comarca of Osona, and were also unable to steal anything, fleeing in a vehicle that was waiting for them outside the shop.
The investigation by the Mossos will seek to determine whether the individual arrested in Terrassa has any connection to the series of jewelry store robberies that has kept Catalan security forces on high alert.
