A six-year-old boy was injured by a gunshot in the southwest of Miami-Dade after accidentally shooting himself with his mother's firearm, according to the Sheriff's Office of the county.

The incident occurred inside the family home located at 10143 Circle Plaza West, in the southwestern part of the county, where the minor and his mother were when the shot was heard, reported Telemundo 51.

According to the authorities, "the boy took the gun and accidentally shot himself in the shoulder."

The mother immediately took him to Jackson South Hospital, from where he was airlifted to HCA Kendall Hospital for specialized treatment.

The authorities confirmed that the minor is in stable condition.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office took over the investigation of the case.

At the time of the report, the location of the weapon was unknown, although authorities confirmed that the mother is the legal owner of a firearm.

"The authorities continue to investigate whether charges will be filed," the news network indicated.

Under Florida law, if a minor gains access to a negligently stored weapon and is injured, the responsible adult may face third-degree felony charges, with penalties of up to five years in prison and fines of up to 5,000 dollars.

The state law also requires gun owners to store them in a locked safe or with a trigger lock when there are minors in the home.

This incident adds to a series of similar accidents reported in the area in recent years.

In July 2025, a two-year-old boy was injured in the leg after accidentally discharging a gun he took from his mother's bag inside a vehicle in Miami Gardens.

In November 2023, a four-year-old girl died in Miami-Dade after being accidentally shot by her three-year-old brother with a gun belonging to her mother's boyfriend.

That same month, a three-year-old girl survived an accidental shooting in Miami-Dade and was discharged from the hospital.

Also in September 2023, a 10-year-old boy died from a self-inflicted accidental shooting in North Miami with a gun registered to an adult.

Firearms are currently the leading cause of child mortality in the United States, surpassing traffic accidents, cancer, and heart disease, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
