Marta Yabor Ballbé, the announcer who hosted the program "Teleavances" on Cuban television for many years, continues to live in Cuba and remains active in the music world, according to a recent post from the platform SuenaCuba that sparked a wave of nostalgia among her followers.
Originally from Camagüey, Marta joined Cuban Television in 1988 and took over as the host of "Teleavances" in 1992. Her voice, impeccable diction, and elegance — followers recall that she wore a different outfit for each Sunday broadcast — made her an inseparable face of the weekly ritual for millions of Cubans who tuned in to the program on Saturdays, just before the night’s movies.
His iconic phrase, "Because you want to know," became a brand etched in the memory of several generations.
In addition to "Teleavances," Yabor participated in other programs such as Quiéreme mucho, El satélite on Cubavisión Internacional, La Revista de la Mañana alongside Fernando Guardado, and Mediodía en TV alternating with Rosa María de la Rosa.
"How could I not remember her? Her unmatched charisma. The reason she left that Saturday spot before the movies was never known," wrote a user on Facebook.
"One of the craziest with the best diction and professionalism. The other day I saw her in the Yellow Submarine. I wish her success in her activities."
The nostalgia that her figure evokes among Cubans both inside and outside the island was summed up in another comment: "Habit is stronger than love. It really has been many years having her presence, her voice, and perfect diction."
Today, at over 60 years old, Marta is the representative and producer of the rock music group Coverland, a project she co-founded with Claudia Núñez and which performs regularly at the Submarino Amarillo Cultural Center in Havana's Vedado district.
On his social media, he frequently shares photos and videos of live performances as well as rehearsals. In one of his recent posts announcing a concert, he included a revealing note about the economic situation artists face in Cuba: "COVERLAND in concert (without receiving a salary this year) but for our audience, friends, and colleagues, we will be there on Saturday the 16th, at night. We hope to see you there!!"
