A Cuban man identified as Willy "N", 29 years old, who sings in bars in Cancun, was severely injured early Thursday morning after being shot nine times on 8th Street in Supermanzana 23, between Granadillo and Palmera Streets, behind the Batab hotel, local media reported.
The attack occurred around 11:00 PM on Wednesday, when the victim was walking back after performing at a bar in the area. According to his own statement to the police, four individuals surrounded him with apparent intent to rob, and he recognized two of them by the nicknames "El Paso" and "Joquel."
Willy sustained four gunshot wounds to the chest, two in one arm, two in the legs, and one in the groin. Neighbors who heard the gunfire called emergency number 911, and the first officers to arrive found him lying face down on the street in a pool of blood.
Paramedics from the Red Cross provided first aid and urgently transferred him to the General Hospital "Dr. Jesús Kumate Rodríguez," where he remains in serious condition with an uncertain prognosis as of Thursday morning.
The Security Complex (C5) activated "code red" protocols, mobilizing elements of the Municipal Police, State Police, and federal forces. Neighbors in the area reported that four individuals ran into the Palmas hotel following the attack; authorities arrived at the hotel and confirmed the presence of four men matching the described characteristics.
According to PorEsto!, the four detainees have been identified as Luis «N» (34 years old), Rubén «N» (40 years old), Enrique «N» (37 years old), and Jasiel «N», all of Cuban nationality, and were transferred to the facilities of the Secretary of Citizen Security to be made available to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Forensic experts from the State Attorney's Office collected two fired cartridges from a handgun for ballistic analysis, and they are examining footage from surveillance cameras in the area to compile the investigation file.
The incident occurs in a context of rising tension in Supermanzana 23, where in recent months residents have protested against foreigners settled in the area due to disturbances to public order and criminal activities.
This is not the first violent case involving Cubans in Cancun in 2026. On March 23, three Cubans were shot in the irregular neighborhood of El Sheriff, in region 236, resulting in one fatality. On May 5, a Cuban man was arrested for the murder of his ex-partner in a bar in the city. And in June 2024, the Cuban musician Ismael González Almeida, guitarist of Familia Son, was shot dead outside a venue where he had performed in that same city.
The Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo is continuing the investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and establish the degree of responsibility of the four detainees.
