The U.S. dollar rose this Friday in the informal Cuban market, reaching 555 CUP, five pesos more than the previous day, according to the reference rate from elTOQUE.
The increase marks a record in the price of the dollar and occurs amidst intense political tensions between Cuba and the United States, in a context of uncertainty and ongoing scarcity on the island.
The rise of the greenback confirms the ongoing pressure on the Cuban peso and the deterioration of the purchasing power of the population.
The euro, for its part, has recorded a decline and is trading today at 630 CUP, ten pesos less than the previous day when it was exchanged at 640 CUP. Although it remains one of the most sought-after currencies in Cuba, the European currency showed a slight setback in informal buying and selling operations conducted this Friday.
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) also decreased in the informal market. This Friday, it was at 400 CUP, which represents a drop of 10 pesos compared to the previous session, when it was trading at 410 CUP. Despite the decline, the MLC remains essential for accessing basic products in state-owned stores.
