The Cuban-American congressman Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL) celebrated the arrest of Adys Lastres Morera, sister of the executive president of GAESA, with a strong message: “The regime's henchmen have no place in our country”.
Giménez posted the message along with the official statement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and added: "Down with the dictatorship and its executioners! Homeland and Life." The congressman began the post with a direct warning: "The freedom of Cuba is drawing closer with the arrest of the sister of the 'president' of the group of thieves from GAESA."
Adys Lastres Morera was arrested in Miami by ICE and HSI agents this Thursday, one day after the State Department revoked her legal permanent resident status under Section 237(a)(4)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
She is the older sister of Brigadier General Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, executive president of GAESA, the military conglomerate that controls between 40% and 70% of the Cuban economy and manages up to 20 billion dollars in illicit assets, according to U.S. authorities.
Rubio was emphatic in his statement regarding the revocation of the Green Card: "There will be no place on this Earth—and certainly not in our country—where foreigners who threaten our national security can live lavishly."
The Secretary of State also noted that Adys "was managing real estate assets and living in Florida while assisting the communist regime in Havana."
Adys Lastres Morera had entered the United States on January 13, 2023, during the Biden administration, at the request of her U.S. citizen son. Since then, she had been listed as a manager or registered agent at two real estate companies in Florida: REMAS Investments LLC and Santa Elena Investments LLC, based in Boca Raton.
The interim associate executive director of HSI, John Condon, warned that the U.S. will investigate networks linked to the Cuban regime: "HSI will continue investigating those who have ties to the adversaries of our nation and will take the necessary measures to neutralize threats against our homeland."
Giménez, born in Havana on January 7, 1954, and the only member born in Cuba of the current House of Representatives, has been a consistent voice against the regime since his arrival in Congress in January 2021.
The arrest of Adys Lastres Morera is part of a coordinated offensive by the Trump-Rubio administration that included direct sanctions against GAESA and its president on May 7, the expansion of sanctions against 11 Cuban officials on May 18, and the declassification of a formal accusation against Raúl Castro for the downing of planes from Hermanos al Rescate in 1996.
Rubio delivered a final message to the regime's leadership: "To the members of the communist mafia of GAESA and Cuba, we have a simple message: the appeasement of the past is over. Return the funds you have stolen from the Cuban people, implement reforms to improve the lives of ordinary Cubans, and allow the Cuban people to have the freedom, opportunity, and dignity they long for and richly deserve."
