Oscar Espinosa Osoria, a 38-year-old Cuban immigrant from Guantánamo, was shot and killed by another Cuban in the parking lot of a shopping center in Houston, Texas, in the early hours of May 20, according to reports from authorities.
Officials from the Houston Police responded to a call about gunshots at around 4:10 a.m. that day, and found Espinosa Osoria unconscious with gunshot wounds in the parking lot in front of a barbershop located at 9387 Richmond Avenue, at the corner of Ocee Street. Paramedics from the Houston Fire Department declared him dead at the scene.
The next day, the police identified the suspect as Emilio Fuentes Cuéllar, 45 years old, who was formally charged with murder in the 495th District Criminal Court of Harris County.
Fuentes Cuéllar, also Cuban, had not been arrested at the time of the accusation and remains at large, reported the Houston Police Department in a statement.
The authorities released his photograph and requested the community's assistance in locating him. As of the time of publishing this report, the police have not confirmed whether Fuentes Cuéllar has been apprehended.
The investigations into the case include the analysis of surveillance footage in which the screams of a woman can be heard upon discovering the body in the parking lot. Another video shared on social media captured the heartbreaking moment.
The victim's sisters told Telemundo Houston that Espinosa Osoria and the suspect knew each other and that both were born in Guantánamo, Cuba.
In his hometown, family and friends set up an improvised altar with candles and music to honor his memory, as shown in images broadcasted by the television channel.
His sisters, devastated by the loss, remember him as "a cheerful, jovial, and helpful man." One of them expressed, "No one is perfect and he had his faults, but he didn't deserve to die like this," and sent a message to the murderer: "I want to tell him that I forgive him for killing my brother because I believe in divine justice; and I can't do anything more, nor will his death or anything take away the pain that I am feeling."
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Emilio Fuentes Cuéllar can call the Homicide Division of the HPD at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477. Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to his capture.
This crime adds to a series of homicides that have shaken the Cuban community in Houston over the past year. Last February, Alexander Bandera, 31, was killed while working as a security guard.
In June 2025, Yoandra González, a 40-year-old mother, was murdered in Houston in a case of domestic violence. Two months earlier, Ediesky Inocencio Piñeiro was shot at the door of his home in the same city, by another Cuban who was arrested the following day.
