Delinquents stole more than three million pesos in cash intended for the payment of pensions from the Social Security Office of the Post Office in the municipality of San Luis, in the province of Pinar del Río, affecting the payments of over 1,110 retirees in that locality.

The fact was disclosed this Monday by the Facebook profile "De Pinar Soy", linked to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), which confirmed the capture of the alleged suspects by agents of the Revolutionary National Police in the province.

According to official information, "certain individuals are believed to have absconded with cash intended for Social Security amounting to over three million pesos at the Post Office in the municipality of San Luis."

The note did not reveal the identities of those involved in the robbery or details about the method they used to carry it out.

Forces from the Minint launched an investigation to identify those responsible and locate the missing money.

According to the official version, the collaboration between the researchers and the company's management allowed for the "recovery in a record time of less than 72 hours of all the cash," and the suspects were arrested and placed at the disposal of the justice system.

The case drew attention due to the significant amount involved and because it concerns resources intended for one of the most vulnerable sectors of the Cuban population, in a context where the minimum pension is equivalent to just seven or eight dollars a month in the informal market, while the basic cost of living is around 12,000 pesos per person.

The profile "De Pinar Soy" concluded its publication with a warning directed at criminals: "No mercy against crime." However, this incident is not an isolated case.

In March 2026, a postal worker in Majagua, Ciego de Ávila, was sentenced to four years in prison for stealing over 57,000 pesos in pensions and postal money orders over a period of three months, which revealed a pattern of irregularities in the management of Social Security funds through the postal offices.

Insecurity and crime have been steadily escalating in Cuba. Last week, in Pinar del Río, a mother reported the assault on her two-year-old daughter, who was struck on the head by a thief in order to steal a tablet. This Monday, a violent robbery of a doctor in her home in Guanabacoa, Havana, was reported, carried out by three armed individuals.

The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit recorded 2,833 verified crimes in the country in 2025, a 115% increase compared to 2024, with thefts being the most common criminal offense.

The economic crisis, power outages, and monetary devaluation are identified as structural factors driving the rise in crime on the island, as a consequence of 67 years of dictatorship that have destroyed the living conditions of the population.
