A young Cuban woman living in Italy surprised her family by returning to her home in Cuba, leading to an emotional reunion with her mother that touched thousands of people on TikTok.

The video, posted last Tuesday by the user @tay.12_, shows the moment when the young woman arrives at her house unexpectedly and uses the whistle she always used to call her mother.

Upon hearing the signal, the mother steps to the door saying "Na" —a term of endearment for her daughter's name— and upon seeing her, she can't believe what is before her eyes.

"But for my girlfriend! But my girlfriend! Oh my God, my girlfriend!" exclaims the mother, visibly overwhelmed with emotion, before the two embrace at the threshold of the house.

The exclamations in Italian heard in the video—"Ai Dio mio," "Io non mi voglio abraçar"—suggest that the young woman emigrated to Italy, one of the European destinations of the Cuban diaspora.

The protagonist summed up the moment with a comment: "Surprise for mamuchi, these hugs have recharged my battery to 100."

In the video description, he wrote: "Returning home always fills my soul... I love you, Mom."

This reunion adds to a viral trend on TikTok that has been ongoing since 2025, where emigrated Cubans document their surprising returns to the island after months or years of separation.

Recent cases include that of Isaura Moreno, who surprised her mother with sunflowers on June 2, and Ray Obón Séne, who reunited with his mother after four years of separation.

There is even a subgenre where Cubans dress up to surprise their loved ones: a video of this kind has accumulated over 1.1 million views.

The emotional phenomenon on social media is a direct consequence of the most massive Cuban migration exodus in recent history: between 2021 and 2024, around 1.79 million Cubans left the island driven by the economic crisis, blackouts, shortages, and the political repression of the dictatorship.

More than 738,000 Cubans arrived in the United States during that period, while Spain, Italy, and Brazil also welcomed tens of thousands of migrants.

This massive separation of families has turned reunion videos into one of the most viral content pieces within the Cuban community on social media, and that of Tay_ was no exception: in just two days, it accumulated 151,800 views and over 6,700 reactions.

The day before its publication, another case moved the community: a Cuban mother reunited with her children in the United States after 24 years of separation.
