The United States Embassy in Cuba published a message this Sunday on its official Facebook page celebrating the birthday of President Donald Trump, who turns 80 years old, and took the opportunity to send a message filled with political symbolism to the Cubans yearning for freedom on the island.

«Today we celebrate a significant birthday... That of President Trump. It's amazing to see social media filled with birthday messages for the President of the United States on this day. It's also Flag Day, which represents our unity and freedom,» posted the diplomatic mission.

June 14 carries this year a triple symbolic weight: it is Trump’s birthday, Flag Day in the United States, and part of the 250th anniversary of American independence (1776-2026), which the #Freedom250 campaign by the State Department commemorates globally.

In the Cuban context, the explicit mention that the flag "represents our unity and freedom" and the use of the hashtag #Freedom250 constitute a direct message to the citizens of the island, in line with the public diplomacy strategy that the embassy has deployed on social media under the leadership of Mike Hammer, who has been at the helm of the mission since November 2024.

This pattern is not new. On May 28, the embassy celebrated Marco Rubio's birthday with a photo of the Secretary of State and Hammer making the "L" for Liberty gesture, which sparked a flood of messages from Cubans asking for a "free Cuba."

The #Freedom250 campaign has also invited Cubans to send messages about freedom to the email HavanaMedia@state.gov, with selections to be published on July 4th.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump celebrated his 80th birthday with a historic mixed martial arts event by the UFC in the South Lawn of the White House, called UFC Freedom 250, broadcasted on Paramount+ featuring figures like Ilia Topuria, Justin Gaethje, and Alex Pereira.

The embassy in Havana has served as the diplomatic voice of the maximum pressure policy of the Trump administration towards the Cuban regime, which since January 2026 has imposed more than 240 sanctions against the Cuban military conglomerate and other figures of the regime.

Hammer was categorical in January when he stated that the release of all political prisoners in Cuba is "not a matter for negotiation" and must happen "no matter what." This stance has been publicly upheld by the embassy even following the acts of repudiation organized against its diplomats on the island.
