A 42-year-old Cuban mother was found dead recently inside a vehicle in Las Vegas, Nevada, after having been shot.

The body was found in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, alongside that of a man of Mexican origin.

The incident is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, according to a statement from the North Las Vegas Police Department in Clark County, as reported by local news.

Although the authorities have not released the name of this mother of three, those close to her have identified her as Yaumila Guillén Zaldívar, better known as "La Guajira Triple M."

She was originally from Holguín and had been residing in Las Vegas for about six years.

The North Las Vegas Police found the lifeless bodies inside a white Toyota Highlander that was parked in the 1800 block of East Lake Mead Boulevard.

According to a report from Telemundo Las Vegas, agents responded to the scene around 3:48 AM on Sunday after receiving calls about two individuals with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle.

The medical staff declared both victims dead at the scene, and the truck showed what appeared to be a bullet impact on the driver's side window.

The identity of the victims

On social media, the victim was known as «La Guajira», «La Guajira Triple M» or «La Dura».

According to the crime reporter, Niover Licea, Yaumila worked at an establishment identified by acquaintances as “El Rincón Nayarita”, in the same area of East Lake Mead Boulevard.

Licea described the victim as a strong and beloved woman: "She had been living in Las Vegas for about six years and had three children. Three children who, unfortunately, are now left orphaned under the care of their father."

The identity of the man has not been revealed as of the closing of this report.

The reporter also noted that, according to testimonies from relatives, the crime may have occurred around 11 PM on Saturday, after the establishment where he worked had closed, although the bodies were not discovered until early Sunday morning.

"The crime against this girl highlights the exposure that women still have here in the United States, within our community, to being assaulted. It is not an isolated incident; it is something that happens often.", concluyó el reportero de sucesos.

The reaction of those who knew her

The news has caused dismay in the Cuban community in Las Vegas and a wave of condolences on social media.

A friend wrote that she had the "pleasure" of hugging her the previous Saturday.

“Such a good mother, such a good wife, such a good friend, and the most prosperous one in that place... an incredible woman... a woman with three children who is a real fighter, please show a little more consideration.”, she lamented.

In the same context, another close friend reacted with outrage to the negative comments circulating on social media from "people who express opinions without even knowing or understanding the individuals."

A region marked by violence

Employees of nearby businesses interviewed by Telemundo Las Vegas expressed concern about the area's safety.

Data from the city of North Las Vegas cited by the aforementioned media outlet indicates that 45 criminal reports were recorded in that area just in the last week.

However, city authorities insist that there is no information indicating a greater threat to public safety as a result of this incident.

However, this case adds to a series of violent crimes against Cuban women in Las Vegas in recent years.

Only in January of this year a Cuban doctor was arrested for fatally attacking his partner in that same city.

Shortly after, in May,  another Cuban was arrested, accused of strangling his wife also in Las Vegas.

As of the writing of this note, there is no additional information regarding the case.
