The Cuban physical trainer Jesús Gallo, a member of the Ilia Topuria team for about four years, posted an emotional message on Instagram on Tuesday, following the defeat of the Hispanic-Georgian fighter against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, held in the south lawn of the White House in Washington D.C.
Gallo wrote the text on his way home, while processing what had happened in the fight on Sunday, in which Gaethje won by TKO at the end of the fourth round and snatched the undisputed lightweight title from Topuria, leaving him with a record of 17-1.
"As I sat on the plane heading home after the fight, I kept asking myself the same question: What went wrong? I replayed every moment in my mind, searching for answers. Then I realized. What I witnessed that night was not a defeat. I saw a warrior, a gladiator, a man willing to give everything for a dream," wrote the Cuban coach.
Gallo, a habanero based in Miami with over 20 years of experience training elite athletes in the UFC, NBA, MLB, and NFL, emphasized the character of his student over the outcome.
"In the midst of the storm, when most were looking for excuses or a way out, Ilia stood firm and displayed the heart of a true champion. Not for a belt, not for a result, but for his courage, resilience, and unbreakable spirit."
The message concluded with a phrase that resonated among thousands of followers: "The belt can define a moment. Character defines a legacy."
Topuria's defeat was marked by a serious eye injury
According to the presenter Pablo Motos, who visited the fighter in the hospital, Topuria fought practically blind for much of the fight.
"He started to go to the left and the exact same thing happened to him. He made two blind assaults," Motos described on his show this Tuesday.
The subsequent diagnosis confirmed fractures in both orbital bones without displacement, injuries that did not require surgery but will keep Topuria out of competition for months.
Since Tuesday, slow-motion images have been shared on social media that fueled the controversy over a possible illegal eye poke by Gaethje in the first round. However, Topuria did not complain to the referee at that moment. Instead of stopping, he held his ground in silence and continued fighting.
It was the brother and coach Aleksandre Topuria who decided to stop the fight at the end of the fourth round to protect the fighter's health.
Gallo, known for his low-profile position within the team, holds a degree in Exercise Physiology with a specialization in Sports Medicine and founded the Elite Athletes Performance gym in Miami.
Topuria himself publicly described him as “the man behind the scenes” and “the one responsible for ensuring my physical training is at 100%.”
Criticism of the Cuban coach on social media
Not all the comments on the post from the Cuban coach were of unconditional support. Some followers questioned the team's strategy and the alleged "low physical condition of Topuria starting from the second round," coincidentally when he began to lose his vision.
User @juancostac wrote: "On Sunday, the entire team was surprised at how Ilia turned out... I never saw a recommendation during the fight. Ilia needs to be told things too, not just be patted on the back."
Despite the criticism, Topuria didn't lose his sense of humor in the hospital. Motos recounted that the fighter said to him, "Champions, when we fall, we fall hard, huh." He then began to outline how he would prepare for the rematch.
