Republican senators from Florida, Ashley Moody and Rick Scott, announced this Wednesday the approval of $935 million for military infrastructure projects in the state, an investment that will benefit air bases, naval facilities, space centers, and strategic technology programs, reported Florida Politics.
The funds were authorized by the Senate Armed Services Committee as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2027, although the legislation still needs to be approved by both chambers of Congress and signed by President Donald Trump before it is formally integrated into the federal budget.
The funding will be distributed among military facilities located in different regions of Florida, from the Space Coast to the southern part of the state.
"Supporting our armed forces is not just my job; as a mother in a military family, it is something personal for me. These achievements are not just allocated funds; they are an initial investment in the future of our armed forces in Florida, aimed at strengthening the state's defense facilities and industrial base," Moody stated in a press release.
Rick Scott emphasized Florida's strategic importance within the U.S. defense system.
"Florida is home to over 20 military facilities and three combat commands. I am pleased to see that so many crucial provisions have been included in this year's version of the bill, which will benefit Florida, our military, and our national security," he stated.
One of the main beneficiaries will be the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, regarded as the most active launch platform in the United States. There, funding will be allocated for the construction of a new command center, warehouses for communication systems, a rail terminal, and a testing center for missile defense programs.
Tyndall Air Force Base, in Panama City, will also receive funds to continue its reconstruction process following the damage caused by Hurricane Michael in 2018. The funds will be used to improve access to the facility and to construct a new fire and rescue station.
For its part, Eglin Air Force Base will receive funding to expand its training capacity, design the King hangar, and develop new facilities for the physical training of military personnel.
The investment will also extend to other key facilities in the state. Homestead Air Reserve Base will receive a climate-controlled tactical storage facility for special operations; Jacksonville Naval Air Station will develop an energy resilience project based on a microgrid; Key West Naval Air Station will continue the construction of a command and control center; Camp Blanding will expand its training capabilities; and the Marine Corps Support Facility at Blount Island will modernize its communications infrastructure.
The approved package also includes investments in advanced technology and defense. Among these, $10 million is highlighted for the development of semiconductor technology in NeoCity, located in Osceola County, and another $10 million is allocated for experimentation with maritime drones at the U.S. Special Operations Command, based in Tampa.
Additionally, the project includes an increase of 30 million dollars to expand the fleet of unmanned vehicles and measures to assess whether the Space Force has the necessary personnel to manage the projected growth of space launches through 2032.
Moody, who after being appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, stated that the investment strengthens Florida's position as one of the leading military and aerospace hubs in the country.
"Since the first day in this Committee, I have worked to ensure that our armed forces remain the most capable and best-supported fighting force in the world," he stated.
