Dwayne Johnson, globally known as The Rock, confessed in an interview with Esquire magazine that he experienced one of the most distressing moments of his life when he discovered a painful lump in his left testicle while showering. The actor and former wrestler, aged 54, spent almost an entire day uncertain whether he had cancer, and he did so in complete silence: without telling anyone, not even his wife.
According to Johnson's account in the interview, the discomfort increased throughout the weekend until it became unbearable. This forced him to see a doctor. The specialist explained that it was most likely epididymitis —an inflammation of the duct located behind the testicle that stores sperm— but that testicular cancer could not be ruled out without an ultrasound. The test was scheduled for the following morning.
There began the 24 longest hours of The Rock.
"I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, without knowing it, and I had to spend the entire day joking and giving speeches," recalled the actor, who was in the midst of promoting a film. In front of the cameras and the audience at CinemaCon, he was all smiles. Inside, he was burdened only by the fear of a serious diagnosis.
What surprised me the most was his decision to remain silent even with his wife, Lauren Hashian, whom he has been married to since August 2019. "I didn't even tell Lauren. I didn't want to worry her before knowing if there was really something to be concerned about," he explained.
The next day brought relief: the ultrasound confirmed it was epididymitis and not a malignant tumor. “I’m fine. But I didn’t know that at the time, and it was really painful,” he said.
Epididymitis is more common than it seems: it affects around 600,000 people a year in the United States alone, according to The New York Post. The problem is that its symptoms—lump, pain, and scrotal inflammation—can easily be mistaken for those of testicular cancer, which understandably causes alarm for those experiencing them.
It is not the first time that Johnson has spoken publicly about his health issues. In June 2025, he revealed that he had suffered from chronic digestive problems for years, which worsened in early 2024, just as he was preparing for a nine-month work stint without a break. That same year, he lost approximately 27 kilos to portray the wrestler Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, a film for which he received the best reviews of his career, and he was hoping for an Oscar nomination that ultimately did not materialize.
Johnson took the opportunity to send a direct message to men: to pay attention to the signs of their bodies and to see a doctor if they experience any unusual changes, without waiting or downplaying the symptoms. "The main thing for me, the reason I get out of bed in the morning and run, is to create. It’s art. It’s telling stories," he concluded in the interview, making it clear that the scare did not dampen his energy or his desire to move forward.
