Portugal and Uzbekistan face off this Tuesday at the NRG Stadium in Houston in the second round of Group K of the , with millions of eyes on the star figure Cristiano Ronaldo following the recent performances of Lionel Messi.

The Portuguese arrive with just one point following the disappointing draw on June 17 against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while the Asians, making their debut in the World Cup, need to win to avoid practically being eliminated.

The debut of Portugal left more shadows than light. João Neves put the Portuguese ahead in the sixth minute, but Yoane Wissa equalized for the DR Congo in injury time of the first half, marking the first goal for that country in World Cup history.

The team of Roberto Martínez dominated with 75.4% possession and completed 783 passes with an accuracy of 92.5%, record figures for the Portuguese national team in a World Cup, although it only generated seven shots and ended up conceding more shots than it produced.

One of the major uncertainties of the match is Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old Portuguese captain has gone ten consecutive matches without scoring in World Cups and European Championships, with his last open-play goal in a major tournament recorded in June 2021. The forward is also chasing a historic milestone: becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups, having achieved this in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions.

The midfielder Vitinha was the driving force of the Portuguese game in their debut. He completed 121 passes against the Africans, the highest number recorded by a Portuguese player in a World Cup match, surpassing the previous record held by Adrien Silva in Russia 2018. Along with Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leão, they form a highly skilled offensive unit that will aim to translate dominance into goals.

Uzbekistan finds itself in a compromised situation. The 1-3 defeat against Colombia on June 17 at the Estadio Azteca left the Asian team at the bottom of the group with zero points, marking three consecutive losses when including previous friendlies against Canada and the Netherlands. Their record against European teams also does not inspire optimism: just one victory in their last 23 encounters with UEFA teams, alongside ten draws and twelve defeats.

Despite everything, Abbosbek Fayzullaev has already shown that the team can cause damage: he scored Uzbekistan's first goal in World Cup history against Colombia, temporarily leveling the score to 1-1. Defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Manchester City and forward Eldor Shomurodov are other key players on the Uzbek squad.

One of the highlights of the match will be the coaches. Fabio Cannavaro, 2006 Ballon d'Or winner and world champion with Italy that same year, has been in charge of Uzbekistan since October 2025. The legendary Italian defender has a perfect record as a player against Portugal: he won all three matches he played against the Portuguese and scored the final goal of his international career against them.

Tactically, Portugal is expected to impose its ball circulation while Uzbekistan relies on a compact block and counter-attacks. The simultaneous match between Colombia and the DR Congo, set to take place this Tuesday at 10:00 PM Cuban time at the Akron Stadium, adds extra pressure: a Portuguese victory could mean early qualification for the next round, while another Uzbek defeat would leave the Asian team on the brink of elimination before the final matchday of the Group K.
