Cuban central Javier Concepción suffered a double fracture of the tibia and fibula in his left leg on Monday during the match between Cuba and Iran, part of the second round of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League (VNL), held in Orléans, France.
The serious injury forced a halt to the match for several minutes and caused scenes of deep distress both on and off the field.
According to the Turkish sports media Fanatik, the accident happened in the second set. Concepción jumped to spike a ball, managed to complete the action, but landed awkwardly upon returning to the ground, fracturing his left leg.
The official medical report, signed by Dr. Lenin Hernández Teuma, physician for the Cuban national team, confirmed that the player suffered a double fracture of the tibia and fibula.
The volleyball player received medical attention on the court for about eight minutes before being stabilized and carried off on a stretcher, amid the applause of the crowd. Footage of the incident showed several of his teammates, players from the Iranian team, and fans visibly upset by what had happened.
Experts consulted by sports media indicated that the injury could correspond to an open fracture, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The president of the Cuban Volleyball Federation, Osvaldo Idel Martínez Arias, announced that Concepción would undergo surgery this Monday.
The severity of the injury leaves the player practically ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season and casts doubt on his availability for a significant part of 2027, pending updates on the progress of his recovery.
The specialized account @voleyboljurisi summarized the impact of the moment with a message that quickly went viral on social media: "After the severe injury suffered by the Cuban player, his teammates could not hold back their tears. The players of the opposing team and the spectators also followed the incident with concern and sadness."
The match ended with a victory for Iran by 3-1, with scores of 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, and 30-28. With this result, Cuba finished the second week of the VNL in Orléans without any wins, having also lost to the United States and France.
Born in Havana on December 27, 1997, Javier Concepción, standing at 2.02 meters tall, is one of the most experienced centers in the current Cuban national team. At 28 years old, he has spent a significant part of his professional career in leagues in Argentina, France, Russia, Poland, and Iran, which is precisely the country he was facing when he suffered the injury.
The player was part of the Cuban national team that participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2018 World Championship. More recently, he was recognized as the second-best blocker in the 2025 Havana Challenger Cup and stood out in the last edition of the Nations League, where he scored 15 points in the match against Argentina.
The Cuban team, which finished the preliminary phase of the VNL with a record of six wins and six losses, will now face the third and final week of the tournament from July 15 to 19 in Kansai, Japan, where it will compete against Belgium, Argentina, Canada, and Italy without one of its key players in blocking.
