Erling Haaland scored twice in the 79th and 90th minutes to help Norway eliminate Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in one of the tournament's most surprising results.

The match started with a golden opportunity for the Canarinha: in the 14th minute, Bruno Guimarães missed a penalty that the Norwegian goalkeeper Nyland saved by guessing the direction of the shot. However, Guimarães himself ended up scoring the opening goal for Brazil in that same phase of the match, giving the Canarinha the lead at halftime.

Norway dominated possession throughout the match with 67% compared to Brazil's 33%, although the South Americans generated more total shots: 11 to nine. The difference was in efficiency: the Scandinavians had five shots on target compared to just three from Brazil.

In the second half, both coaches made substitutions. Carlo Ancelotti brought on Endrick in the 58th minute and Neymar in the 67th, while Stale Solbakken opted for Oscar Bobb and Schjelderup from the start of the second half. None of the changes affected the scoreline until Haaland took control.

The forward from Manchester City equalized in the 79th minute, just as Brazil was substituting Guimarães off the field, and sealed the victory in the 90th with a second goal that left the Brazilian defense without an answer. Neymar, who had come on to try to turn the tide of the match, received a yellow card in the final moments.

With this double, Haaland has accumulated seven goals in the 2026 World Cup, establishing himself as one of the top scorers of the tournament. He had already scored the decisive goal against Ivory Coast in the round of 16 on June 30 in Dallas.

Brazil, which entered the match as one of the favorites for the title after leading Group C with seven points and coming back against Japan in the previous round, is eliminated from the tournament. The Canarinha had advanced to the Round of 16 with goals from Casemiro and Martinelli against Japan on June 29.

Norway, on the other hand, is writing a historic page in Scandinavian football by reaching the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time since France 1998, 28 years ago.
