A young Cuban and her siblings welcomed their mother at the airport in Serbia with flowers, tears, and hugs, marking the end of four years of separation. The emotional moment was captured in a video posted on TikTok last Tuesday by the account @adri.margaret, known as "La guajira viral."

The young woman accompanied the images with a message that captures the sentiment of thousands of Cuban families separated by migration: “No distance can extinguish a mother's love. From Cuba to Serbia, for a hug after 4 years. Reunion.”

In the 28-second video, the moment when the mother arrives at the airport and her children greet her with flowers amidst sobs and embraces is captured. The scene, simple yet heart-wrenching, immediately resonated with a Cuban diaspora that sees its own story reflected in it.

The case reflects a widespread reality among Cubans who emigrated to Serbia during the peak of the so-called "Balkan route," between 2021 and 2023, when the European country allowed visa-free entry for Cuban citizens. During that period, thousands of Cubans flew from Havana to Belgrade with the intention of irregularly crossing into the European Union, and the flow reached its highest point in 2022 with 6,632 recorded entries.

Since April 2024, Serbia has eliminated visa-free travel and strengthened its border security through an agreement with Frontex, which has drastically reduced the arrival of new Cuban migrants. However, a stable community of over a hundred Cubans currently resides in the country, primarily in Belgrade, which explains why families like that of this young woman have been established there for several years.

Family reunions of Cuban emigrants have become a recurring phenomenon on social media, where the diaspora documents the emotional toll of years of separation caused by the island's economic and political crisis. After 24 years, a Cuban mother embraced her children in the United States in a video that also went viral last June, while in August 2025, Helen Sosa had her own reunion with her children after six years apart.

In February of this year, a mother returned to Cuba to see her son after three years apart, and the child's reaction moved thousands of users. In April, the heartbreaking scream of a girl upon reuniting with her mother added another chapter to this series of stories that portray the human impact of Cuban emigration.

The video from Serbia garnered nearly 4,000 views, 357 "likes," and over a hundred comments in just a few hours, with messages from users sharing their own experiences of separation and reunion. "Reunion, mother and children after 4 years. Thank you, God," the young woman wrote in the description of the clip, which for many Cubans abroad is much more than just a post: it is a testament to the struggles of building a life away from family.
