Two people traveling on the same motorcycle lost their lives early Saturday morning after colliding with the rear of a tractor-trailer on US 27, at mile marker 21, near Pembroke Road, in Miramar, Florida.

According to the Miramar Police Department as reported to Telemundo 51, the collision occurred around 1:38 a.m. when traffic in the southbound lanes had already slowed down, and the motorcycle was unable to brake in time.

A key element that worsened the situation was a prior vehicle fire that had stopped traffic on the same road before the fatal collision, as noted by Local 10 News. Traffic was backed up at least half a mile north of the accident site when the motorcycle collided with the trailer.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not revealed their identities while notifying their families.

The Traffic Homicide Unit of the Miramar Police has taken over the investigation, which remains "active and ongoing," according to the institution itself. Officers from the Miramar and Pembroke Pines departments responded to the scene of the incident.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of US 27 at Pines Boulevard for approximately eight hours to carry out proceedings at the scene. The road was reopened to traffic once the investigation work was completed.

The accident occurs in a concerning context for road safety in the state: Florida has ranked first in the country for motorcyclist deaths for the third consecutive year, with 578 fatalities recorded in 2024 in over 9,400 accidents. The Broward County, where this tragedy occurred, was the third deadliest in the state that year, with 32 motorcyclist deaths, only behind Miami-Dade and Hillsborough.

Rear-end collisions involving heavy vehicles are particularly deadly for motorcyclists, who lack physical protection against impacts of this magnitude. The road rage and fatal accidents in Florida have been increasing, and factors such as heavy traffic, speeding, and limited helmet laws contribute to the high accident rate in the state.

The investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision in Miramar remains open, and the authorities have not confirmed any additional details about what happened.
