At 10:00 a.m., Cuban local time, opens this Thursday, July 23, with a rising trend for the main currencies.
The US dollar and the euro have registered gains compared to the previous day, while the MLC also reports a notable increase, although its quotation should be considered as an indicative value due to the low trading volume supporting it.
Summary of exchange rates
- Exchange rate of the USD to CUP: 671 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 778 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 480 CUP (indicative value, limited data).
Dollar: Rises and consolidates a week of upward trend
The US dollar is trading at 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time) this Thursday at 671 CUP pesos in the informal market, with a buying price of 667 CUP and a selling price of 675 CUP.
This represents an increase of 3.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when the average value was 668 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The trend this week is clearly upward: seven days ago, the dollar was exchanged for 655 CUP, which represents an increase of 16 pesos during that period, equivalent to a rise of 2.4%.
The demand for dollars remains high among those looking to protect their savings from the depreciation of the peso.
Regarding the monthly evolution, 30 days ago the dollar was at 695 CUP, above the current level. However, this comparison should be approached with caution, as it may reflect methodological adjustments to the index rather than just market movement.
In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 610 CUP and a maximum of 695 CUP in the informal market.
Euro: Also rising and remains the most expensive currency
The euro rises this Thursday to a average value of 778 CUP, with a buying range at 770 CUP and selling at 786 CUP.
Regarding the previous session, the European currency gains 3 pesos, an increase of 0.4%.
The weekly trend is also positive: seven days ago, the euro was trading at 755 CUP, which indicates a gain of 23 pesos over the last week, a 3% increase.
It is affirmed as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by 107 pesos, consolidating its dominant position.
In the monthly comparison, 30 days ago the euro was at 799 CUP, slightly above the current level, although this difference may partly be due to methodological adjustments of the index.
The range for the euro in the last month is between 688 CUP as the minimum and 799 CUP as the maximum.
MLC: Strong increase, but with caution due to data scarcity
The MLC registers this Thursday a guideline average value of 480 CUP, with purchases at 476 CUP and sales at 484 CUP.
Regarding the previous day, when it was at 439 CUP, the increase is 41 pesos, a 9.3% rise. However, this figure should be taken with caution: the source warns that the volume of operations in this range is low, so the value is merely indicative.
In the weekly comparison, seven days ago the MLC was quoted at 475 CUP, just 5.5 pesos below the current level.
Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-owned businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
The gap with the official rate is widening increasingly
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 596 CUP per dollar and 680 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
The difference between the official rate and the informal rate reaches this Thursday 75 pesos for the dollar and 98 pesos for the euro.
Although Segment III was presented as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far removed from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.
In the past month, the official dollar rate has gone from 569 to 596 CUP, an adjustment that has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.
The gap between the official and informal exchange rates reflects the persistent shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros among the population, whether for emigration, importing goods, protecting savings, or making purchases in the private sector.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every variation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
Methodology
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market, created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency buying and selling posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.
The calculation dismisses atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
