The Cuban baseball player Miguel Vargas hit his 22nd home run this Sunday in the 2026 Major League season, a hit that placed him in the history books of the Chicago White Sox as one of the third basemen with the most home runs before the month of August in the franchise.
According to journalist Francys Romero, the home run placed Vargas in fourth place on that historical list, tied with Joe Crede (2006) and Matt Davidson (2017), both having hit 22 home runs in the same segment of the season.

With several games still to be played before the end of July, Vargas is just one home run away from tying Robin Ventura for third place and three away from Bill Melton in second, keeping the possibility of continuing to climb in the organization's history very much alive.
The home run on Sunday against the Astros was a two-run hit that put the White Sox ahead 5-3, adding significant offensive value to the historical record.
The 2026 season represents the best year of the Havana native's career. His previous high was 16 home runs in the entire 2025 season, a figure he matched in just 65 games of the current campaign, a clear indication of the power surge that the 26-year-old player has experienced.
That performance earned him his first call-up to the 2026 All-Star Game, where he also made an impact: on July 14, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, he hit a 433-foot home run, becoming the third player from the White Sox to achieve this milestone in the Summer Classic, following Frank Thomas (1995) and Magglio Ordóñez (2001).
Vargas was also the first third baseman of the franchise to be selected for the All-Star game since Joe Crede in 2008, and he was part of the group of seven Cubans chosen for the event, marking the second largest representation of players from the Island in the history of the game.
Son of former Cuban player Lázaro Vargas, the third baseman signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 and made his MLB debut in August 2022. He arrived in Chicago in 2024 through a three-team trade and has since established himself as the starting third baseman for the White Sox.
With the pace he’s maintaining, Vargas has a real opportunity to continue rewriting the history of the position in one of the oldest franchises in Major League Baseball.
