Hundreds of families, adults, young people, and children, many of them dressed in white, gathered on Saturday at a beach in Pinar del Río to participate in a mass baptism organized by the Methodist Church in Cuba, in which around 450 people entered the sea during a day that the institution itself described as its "Year of Multiplied Blessings."
The event was led by Norberto Pedrero, Superintendent of the Pinar del Río District, along with several pastors from the area.
The images shared by the church on its social media show a crowd on the shore, with colorful umbrellas and a festive, community atmosphere, even captured from aerial angles that highlight the scale of the gathering.
Each of the baptized was given a Bible as part of the celebration, as reported by the institution itself: "Bibles for the baptized!" it posted on its official profile.
"Together with pastors from the Pinar del Río District. A day of multiplied blessings," the church summarized in one of its posts about Saturday's event.
Baptism in water is the rite of initiation of Protestant and evangelical Christianity: it symbolizes the death of the previous life and spiritual rebirth, and is performed as a public declaration of faith before the community.
Carrying it out at sea, instead of in a temple, adds a symbolic component and transforms the act into a visible collective celebration, a practice that has gained strength in Cuba in recent years.
The event takes place at a time when the Island is experiencing one of its deepest crises, marked by widespread shortages, prolonged blackouts, and accelerated social decline.
Researchers and analysts have documented that in times of extreme hardship, people's engagement with faith tends to increase, and Cuba is no exception: evangelical and Protestant churches have experienced sustained growth in recent decades, providing community, support, and a sense of belonging in the face of adversity.
The Alliance of Christians in Cuba denounced in 2025 that more than 80% of local churches lack legal status, which has not prevented religious activities from continuing to expand.
The Methodist Church has a significant territorial presence in Cuba. In 2017, UM News reported more than 400 churches and a presence in 80% of Cuban municipalities, along with approximately 1,000 missionary centers and thousands of prayer groups.
Two years later, the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church stated that the denomination was already present in 99.4% of the municipalities and that its membership had increased from 12,622 people in 2003 to 51,266 in 2019, an approximate growth of 306% over 16 years.
An analysis published in 2025 by the Caribbean Basin Research Institute estimated that regular attendance at Sunday services of Cuban Protestant churches exceeds 600,000 people. The study also noted that the Methodist Church currently has five times more parishioners than it did in 1959.
