The Cuban player Yordan Álvarez kicked off August with an outstanding performance this Sunday by hitting four singles, three of which were doubles, and driving in two runs in the victory of the Houston Astros over the Texas Rangers with a score of 7-3.

The journalist Francys Romero reported on the Cuban's performance emphasizing that the designated hitter from Las Tunas "started August on fire" with that performance of four hits, three doubles, and two RBIs.

With those numbers, Álvarez leads all Major League batters with an average of .330, and tops the American League in both home runs (35) and runs batted in (84), making him the leading candidate for the Triple Crown in that league.

The Triple Crown —leading simultaneously in batting average, home runs, and RBIs— is one of the most difficult achievements in modern baseball. It hasn't been accomplished in the American League since Miguel Cabrera did it in 2012.

The 2026 season for Álvarez has been on the rise since day one. By April, he was already leading MLB in on-base percentage (.578) and slugging (.900), with 10 home runs in just 22 games. By the end of that month, he had a .358 batting average, 11 home runs, and 26 RBIs in 27 games.

In May, he was named American League Player of the Month, with a .356 batting average, 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.199 in 32 games, leading MLB in those three offensive categories.

In July, Álvarez was already playing at a Triple Crown level with a .324 batting average, 33 home runs, and 75 RBIs, and he was selected for the 2026 All-Star Game.

The start of August raises those figures to the current levels and establishes the Cuban as the most complete hitter of the season in both leagues.

Álvarez wears number 44 for the Astros and shares the field with Venezuelan José Altuve (number 27), on a team that secured an important victory against their divisional rival this Sunday.

The Cuban won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 2022, the year the Astros won the World Series, and his 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the most dominant of his career in Major League Baseball.

If Álvarez maintains the lead in all three categories until the end of the season, he would become the first player to win the American League Triple Crown in 14 years.
