The Cuban volleyball player Wilfredo León was crowned champion of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League this Sunday along with the Polish national team, which defeated the United States in a dramatic five-set final held at the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Center in the Chinese city of Ningbo.

According to volleyballworld.com, the international federation of the sport, the final score was 3-2 with set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, and 15-10, in front of nearly 6,000 fans in attendance.

León, a 33-year-old from Santiago measuring 2.01 meters tall, was the second-highest scorer for Poland in the final with 15 points: 10 from attacks, three from blocks, and two aces. His contribution proved crucial in the fifth set, where he scored four points during the most critical moments of the match, including the championship point which came with one of his blocks.

The MVP of the tournament was the Polish striker Tomasz Fornal, who also finished the final with 15 points, including five aces. Poland's top scorer in the match was Kamil Semeniuk with 17 points.

"It’s hard to describe... There is a lot of emotion. I think when we return to Poland, we will feel what we accomplished. Tonight was a great match, a great victory. Everyone contributed on the court, so we should be proud of our team," Semeniuk declared to the tournament's official channel.

Poland's path to the title was nearly impeccable. The Europeans finished the regular phase in second place with 10 wins and just two losses, against Slovenia and undefeated Japan. In the quarterfinals, they swept Ukraine 3-1, and in the semifinals, they avenged their earlier loss to Slovenia with a resounding 3-0 victory, in which León shone with six aces.

Throughout the tournament, the Cuban accumulated 129 points: 97 from attacks with an efficiency of 53.3%, 13 from blocks, and 19 through serves. His 19 aces placed him among the top five in this category for the event.

With this title, Poland won the Men's Nations League for the third time, following their golds in 2023 and 2025. For León, the tournament podium has become a regular occurrence: he claimed silver in the 2021 edition and bronze in 2024, in addition to the three golds. His achievements with the Polish national team also include gold at the 2023 European Championship, silver at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and bronze at the 2025 World Championship in the Philippines.

León is part of a generation of Cuban volleyball players who, faced with the bureaucratic hurdles of the island's sports system in managing contracts abroad, chose to compete under different flags. Cases like those of Yoandy Leal with Brazil and Osmany Juantorena with Italy marked this exodus of talent that the Cuban regime failed to retain.

The United States, for its part, has accumulated four silver medals in four contested Nations League finals, without being able to lift the title in any of them.
