The Cuban volleyball player Wilfredo León became the champion of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League this Sunday alongside the Polish national team, which defeated the United States in a dramatic five-set final held at the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Center in the Chinese city of Ningbo.

According to volleyballworld.com, the international federation of the sport, the final score was 3-2 with set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, and 15-10, in front of nearly 6,000 fans present in the stands.

León, a 33-year-old from Santiago who stands 2.01 meters tall, was Poland's second-highest scorer in the final with 15 points: 10 from attacks, three from blocks, and two aces. His contribution was crucial in the fifth set, where he scored four points at the most intense moment of the match, including the championship point which was achieved with one of his blocks.

The MVP of the tournament was the Polish attacker Tomasz Fornal, who also finished the final with 15 points, including five aces. Poland's top scorer in the match was Kamil Semeniuk with 17 points.

"It’s hard to describe... There’s a lot of emotion. I think when we return to Poland, we will feel what we’ve accomplished. Tonight was a great match, a great victory. Everyone contributed on the court, so we should be proud of our team," Semeniuk said to the tournament's official channel.

Poland's path to the title was nearly impeccable. The Europeans finished the regular phase in second place with 10 victories and only two losses, against Slovenia and the undefeated Japan. In the quarterfinals, they swept Ukraine 3-1, and in the semifinals, they avenged their defeat to Slovenia with a resounding 3-0, a match in which León shone with six aces.

Throughout the tournament, the Cuban scored 129 points: 97 from attacks with an efficiency of 53.3%, 13 from blocks, and 19 from serves. His 19 aces placed him among the top five in that category for the competition.

With this title, Poland lifted the men's Nations League for the third time, following their golds in 2023 and 2025. For León, reaching the podium in the tournament has become a constant: he won silver in the 2021 edition and bronze in 2024, in addition to the three golds. His achievements wearing the Polish jersey also include gold at the 2023 European Championship, silver at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and bronze at the 2025 World Championship in the Philippines.

León is part of a generation of Cuban volleyball players who, faced with the bureaucracy of the island's sports system in managing contracts abroad, chose to compete under different flags. Cases like those of Yoandy Leal with Brazil and Osmany Juantorena with Italy marked this exodus of talent that the Cuban regime could not retain.

The United States, for its part, has accumulated four silver medals in four Nations League finals contested, without being able to lift the title in any of them.
