Informal currency market closes with surprises: dollar stagnating, euro declining, and MLC rising

The closed this Monday with mixed movements: the US dollar remained unchanged at 673 Cuban pesos, the euro dropped to around 785 CUP, and the freely convertible currency (MLC) rose to 489 CUP.

The dollar ended the day with an average price of 673 CUP, resulting from purchase offers around 670 CUP and selling prices at 675 CUP. It is exactly the same value recorded during the opening and closing on Sunday.

The euro, for its part, closed at around 785 CUP, with buying offers at 780 CUP and selling offers at 790 CUP. The European currency lost approximately 2.5 pesos (-0.3%) against the average value of the previous day.

The MLC —which exists exclusively in digital format— recorded an indicative average value of 489 CUP, with purchase references at 448 CUP and sales at 530 CUP. This represents an increase of 10 pesos (+2.1%) compared to Sunday.

In the weekly balance, the dollar remains unchanged: seven days ago it was also quoted at 673 CUP, so there is no variation.

The euro was then at 790 CUP, resulting in a decline of 5 pesos (-0.6%). The MLC, which was at 471 CUP, now shows a suggestive increase of 18 pesos (+3.8%).

A stable dollar and a euro close to its monthly high

During the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 655 CUP and a high of 675 CUP. Its current closing price of 673 pesos confirms the stability demonstrated over the past week.

The euro has fluctuated between 739 and 790 CUP and, despite the decrease this Monday, it remains close to its monthly high. The MLC has recorded values between 425 and 543 CUP, although its recent figures should be regarded as indicative due to the limited amount of available data.

Comparison with the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III —applicable to the population and comparable to the informal market— is set this Monday at 615 CUP per dollar and 707 CUP per euro.
