Cuba concluded on Monday the tenth day of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games with 31 gold, 26 silver, and 35 bronze medals, for a total of 92 medals that keeps it in third place in the official medal standings for Santo Domingo 2026.
Mexico continues to lead with 119 gold medals and a total of 268 medals, followed by Colombia with 59 gold medals and 174 in total. Cuba surpasses Venezuela (22 golds, 123 medals) and Puerto Rico (18 golds, 72 medals), which occupy the fourth and fifth places, respectively.
Monday's competition yielded one of the most celebrated outcomes for the Cuban delegation: gold in women's field hockey, achieved by defeating Mexico 2-0 in penalties following a scoreless draw in regulation time.
The performance of the women's hockey team throughout the tournament was dominant: they scored 29 goals and conceded only one in the entire competition, a figure that reflects the team's strong defense and offense.
In baseball, Cuba also has reasons for optimism. The team, led by Germán Mesa, advanced undefeated to the super round after winning all three of its preliminary phase matches: they defeated Curacao 4-1, Puerto Rico 4-0, and the Dominican Republic 9-6. The super round is scheduled for August 4 to 6, with the finals on the 7th.
Cuba arrived in Santo Domingo with a delegation of 504 athletes spread across 42 disciplines, the largest in its recent history. The stated goal before the start of the games is to finish among the top three and aim for around 68 gold medals.
In San Salvador 2023, Cuba finished third with 74 gold medals and a total of 196 medals, marking the first time in history that the island was outside of the top two positions in the medal standings.
Historically, Cuba is the nation with the most gold medals accumulated in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games, with 1,919 golds and a total of 3,730 medals, a record that no other delegation has managed to equal.
