Cuban men's boxing concluded the finals in Santo Domingo 2026 without winning a single title, marking one of the poorest outcomes for the sport in the recent history of the Central American and Caribbean Games. The three male finalists lost to rivals from the Dominican Republic, leaving the delegation with only one gold medal in boxing, which was contributed by the women's division.
That title was achieved thanks to Dayira Mesa, who won by split decision (3-2) against the Puerto Rican Stephanie Piñeiro in the women's 70-kilogram category, in what the Cuban press highlighted as the first gold medal for a female boxer from the Island in the recent history of the regional event.
The contrast with the men's division was striking. Alejandro Claro (55 kg) lost by unanimous decision (4-0) to the Dominican Yunior Alcántara; Yusnier Sorsano (70 kg) was defeated (4-1) by Ricardo Cuello; and Julio César La Cruz (90 kg), the most decorated member of the delegation, was beaten by split decision (4-1) by Cristian Pinales, in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.
The official media outlet Cubadebate itself acknowledged that, in the men's category, "no boxer emerged victorious from the ring" during the final day.
The defeat of La Cruz carries a special symbolic weight. The two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion was aiming for his fourth consecutive Central American title —having won in Veracruz 2014, Barranquilla 2018, and San Salvador 2023— and was appointed as the flag bearer for the Cuban delegation alongside triple jump athlete Leyanis Pérez. He left the ring without the gold that would have made him the most decorated boxer in the history of these Games.
The situation had become complicated even before the finals. According to Cubadebate itself, Cuban boxing "experienced a bitter afternoon with multiple defeats" in the semifinals, which reduced the chances of medals before the title fights. The bronze medals were awarded to Magda Massó (57 kg), Yoana Rodríguez (75 kg), Keylor García (80 kg), Carisney García (54 kg), and Fernando Arzola (+90 kg). Cuba concluded the tournament with a total of one gold, three silvers, and six bronzes.
These absences in the ring were compounded by the absence of Erislandy Álvarez, Olympic champion in 63.5 kg, who was unable to participate in Santo Domingo due to an emergency surgery, with no substitute available in his category.
The great victor of the event was the host country. The Dominican Republic won all seven finals it contested in boxing and became the champion of the tournament with seven gold medals and one silver, its best historical performance in the sport at Central American Games. Venezuela finished second (three golds, four silvers, three bronzes) and Mexico third (one gold, five silvers, two bronzes).
The result contrasts with San Salvador 2023, where Cuba won five gold medals in boxing and used that haul to secure third place in the overall medal table, behind Mexico and Colombia. In Santo Domingo 2026, the Cuban delegation repeated that third place in the overall medal standings, but with a boxing yield that has no recent precedent due to its scarcity.
The decline is not incidental. In September 2025, Cuba closed the World Boxing Championship in Liverpool without titles for the first time since 1974. The sport has been suffering for years from the exodus of coaches, boxers fleeing to professionalism, and a noticeable drop in the generational transition. As 14ymedio pointed out, "the authorization for some boxers to compete in professional circuits has not reversed that trend, and international results are starting to reflect it harshly."
