The Cuban government expresses condolences to Colombia for the victims and damages caused by the earthquake

The Cuban government expressed its condolences to Colombia for the victims and the severe damage caused by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the western part of the country, resulting in at least 111 fatalities and 87 injuries, according to the latest official report.

The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his condolences on X for the deaths, injuries, and damage caused by the earthquake in the Chocó department. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Colombia in this sorrowful moment," he wrote.

The chancellor Bruno Rodríguez also expressed condolences to the people and government of Colombia for the loss of human lives, the injuries, and the damage caused by the earthquake. "The brotherly Colombian people can count on Cuba's solidarity and willingness in these moments of sorrow," asserted Rodríguez. The official did not specify whether Havana would send material assistance or emergency equipment to the South American country.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded at 7:34 AM on Monday, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar, in the Chocó department.

The tremor caused significant damage in several cities in western Colombia, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó, and Manizales.

Numerous buildings were damaged and others collapsed, while emergency teams continued searching for people trapped under the rubble.

The Colombian president confirmed 111 fatalities and 87 injuries in the latest report. This figure is still provisional as rescue operations and damage assessments are ongoing.

The tremor was felt in much of Colombia, including Bogotá, and was also perceived in areas of Ecuador and Panama.
