The Cuban government expressed its condolences to Colombia for the victims and the severe damage caused by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the western part of the country, resulting in at least 111 fatalities and 87 injuries according to the latest official report.
The leader Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his condolences on X for the deaths, the injured, and the damages caused by the earthquake in the Chocó department.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the government and people of Colombia during this sad time," he wrote.
The chancellor Bruno Rodríguez also sent condolences to the people and government of Colombia in light of the loss of human lives, the injuries, and the damages caused by the earthquake.
"Count on the brotherly Colombian people with the solidarity and support of Cuba in these moments of pain," affirmed Rodríguez. The official did not specify whether Havana would send material aid or emergency equipment to the South American country.
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:34 AM on Monday, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department.
The seismic event caused serious damage in several cities of western Colombia, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó, and Manizales.
Numerous buildings were damaged, and others collapsed, while emergency teams continued searching for people trapped under the rubble.
The Colombian president confirmed 111 deceased and 87 injured in the latest report.
The figure is still provisional as rescue efforts and damage assessments are ongoing.
The tremor was felt in much of Colombia, including Bogotá, and was also sensed in areas of Ecuador and Panama.
Colombian authorities declared a state of emergency to mobilize resources and expedite assistance to the affected communities.
