Lionel Messi made a surprise return to the field this Wednesday, five days after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who passed away in Rosario at the age of 68. The 39-year-old Argentine star entered at the beginning of the second half in the Leagues Cup match between Inter Miami and the Mexican club León, held at the Nu Stadium in Miami.
No one expected it. Not even his own teammates. Messi had traveled to Rosario to say goodbye to his father and returned to Miami early Wednesday morning, spending the day at his home in Fort Lauderdale before making a surprise appearance in the locker room. As journalist Michelle Giannone revealed during the Apple TV broadcast, the captain himself asked coach Guillermo Hoyos to be on the bench and to play a few minutes: "Not even his team expected it. It was a shock. And he said, 'Yes, I'm going to play.'"
What made his appearance even more special was the context: hours before the match, Messi had posted on Instagram a heartfelt farewell letter to his father in which he questioned his future in football. "I don't know what I'm going to do without you, I don't know how to move forward. I was just playing football, and now I have a lot of doubts about whether I will continue doing it for much longer," he wrote.
Despite those words, there was Leo. Having not trained since his trip to Argentina and without warming up during the break with the other substitutes, he jumped onto the field and the Nu Stadium erupted.
The ovation was deafening. The fans, standing, welcomed him with applause and chants in one of the most emotional moments ever remembered in the stadium. The official MLS account summarized it with a phrase that received 250,000 likes: "We missed you, Messi. Welcome back."
The one who spoke the most afterward was Casemiro, the Brazilian midfielder, visibly moved by his teammate’s gesture. “He is an example. He is certainly going through a very tough time, but he had a commitment not only to the players but to the club, which was incredible; I have never seen anything like that in my life. All we can do is thank him for being here.”
On the field, Messi tried everything, but in the end, Inter Miami lost 3-2 to León and was eliminated from the Leagues Cup. At the final whistle, Messi walked alone to the locker room, receiving respectful greetings from the opponents.
The result took a back seat. What mattered was seeing him back, carrying the weight of mourning and wearing the jersey. The next chapter could unfold on Saturday when Inter Miami visits Nashville in MLS.
