The independent Cuban journalist José Luis Tan Estrada published heart-wrenching images documenting the extreme neglect of patients in Ward A of the Hospital Amalia Simoni in Camagüey.

The patients show clear physical deterioration, with pronounced ribs. The two individuals are nearly naked and malnourished, lying on uncovered beds.

According to Tan Estrada, those affected are elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and patients from psychiatric institutions.

"They are people who, due to their circumstances, cannot take care of themselves or speak up when they are hungry, when they need to be cleaned, or when they have been in undignified conditions for hours," she wrote in her complaint.

The journalist warned that patients remain for hours without the most basic hygiene, unattended and covered in feces. "No one bathes them. No one cleans them. No one feeds them. They are malnourished, covered in flies, lying there," he denounced.

The food they receive is practically nonexistent: "They are served a fish with a million bones. No one is there to attend to them. They are malnourished, naked, dirty," described Tan Estrada.

The Amalia Simoni Hospital has received numerous reports of collapse in its services. In August 2025, destroyed and unsanitary restrooms were documented here. In October of the same year, older adults in geriatrics without basic hygiene were reported, covered in feces.

In November 2025, the surgical room ceilings collapsed and forced the suspension of surgeries. In July 2026, a fire in the hospital's generator necessitated the evacuation of newborns to the Pediatric Hospital. That same month, Tan Estrada himself had already showcased the observation room with mold and structural deterioration.

"These images are as painful as they are difficult to look at. They show a reality that is shocking," wrote Tan Estrada when publishing his denunciation.
