A Gynecology and Obstetrics resident doctor in Cienfuegos reported this Thursday the theft of a backpack inside the maternity hospital where she works, in which she kept a laptop with her thesis data, personal documents, money, and other items.

Liset López reported on Facebook that she left her belongings on Wednesday in the medical guard office on the fourth floor, alongside the backpacks of specialists and colleagues, during her work hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Upon returning to leave for home, he discovered that his backpack was missing.

" I had my study laptop with all my thesis data,” the young woman explained in simple words, capturing the value of what was lost: it was not just a computer, but also months of academic work and key information to complete her education.

Inside, he also had a watch, work uniform, identity card, bank cards, his medical seal, money, and keys.

The doctor stated that she has already filed a report and is seeking help to try to recover her belongings: "I am only asking technicians and anyone who can help," she wrote, and shared photographs of the computer to facilitate its identification.

The case generated numerous messages of support and raised questions about safety within the healthcare facility.

«Every day less security,» lamented one person, while another asked: «Where is the security for doctors?».

Other comments stated that it would not be the first time that thefts have occurred in that area of the hospital.

A person stated that these incidents happen "repeatedly" at the venue, while another claimed to have previously suffered the theft of a phone at the same location.

There were also messages directed at the one who took the belongings. "Please, may God touch their heart and, with the same attitude they had, return them," wrote one user. Another expressed, "May God allow you to recover all your belongings."

The complaint comes at a time of severe economic challenges for healthcare professionals and in an alarming climate of insecurity.

At the beginning of the month, a man allegedly entered a maternity home in Santiago de Cuba in the early hours of the morning, making his way to the area where the patients were and threatening a pregnant woman with a knife to steal her belongings.

On the other hand, a laptop is a high-value item in Cuba due to its high price, which makes it inaccessible for those who rely solely on a state salary.

The new salary scale of the National Health System, effective since July, established a monthly base salary of 7,045 CUP for non-specialized or newly graduated doctors and 8,880 CUP for second-degree specialists.

Even for a doctor with one of the highest salaries within the Cuban state system, purchasing a computer can be practically impossible if relying solely on their monthly income.
