A banner with the slogan "100 years with Fidel Castro," installed on the facade of the "Los Claveles–Rincón Cubano" booth of the Communist Party of Spain at the Málaga Fair, was found altered with the phrases "CASTRO MURDERER," "67 years of dictatorship."
The images were shared on social media by the Cuban activist Avana De La Torre, who celebrated the action and urged Cubans to oppose any attempt to glorify the dictator in public spaces.
The booth, located in the Cortijo de Torres fairgrounds, had displayed the poster during the fair — held from August 15 to 22 — as part of a political commemoration of the centenary of Castro's birth, which took place on August 13, 1926.
PCE Málaga posted on its social media: "We do not pay tribute. He lives within us. The commander celebrates his 100th anniversary."
After the graffiti appeared, the poster was removed from the facade. The specific authorship of the intervention was not officially confirmed by any independent authority.
The phrase "67 years" inscribed on the mural refers to the time that has passed since Castroism took power in Cuba in 1959, a dictatorship that has driven millions of Cubans into exile, including a large community settled in Spain.
Avana De La Torre was emphatic in assessing what happened: "That is the response we, as dignified Cubans, must give! They can call the police a thousand times, but wherever they try to whitewash the dictator, there will be opposition to denounce it and demand that they withdraw their tributes."
The activist also emphasized that "the streets and fairs are not showcases for promoting the Castro dictatorship."
This is not the first time that this booth has generated controversy at the Málaga fair. In 2025, the Málaga City Council had already warned the PCE of possible sanctions due to a mural bearing the slogan "No to war. No to NATO," as it was considered to violate the municipal ordinance prohibiting advertising and propaganda on the facades of fair booths outside of the authorized programming.
The episode takes place during the centenary of Castro's birth, which the Cuban regime commemorated on August 13 with official events at the Karl Marx Theatre in Havana, attended by Raúl Castro, amid a severe economic crisis on the island characterized by prolonged blackouts and widespread shortages.
In Cuba, the resistance has also been expressed on the streets: days before the intervention in Málaga, an official billboard featuring the face of Fidel Castro was splattered with red paint on the island, in a similar gesture of rejection against the official cult of the dictator.
The Cuban community in Spain has led various protest actions throughout 2026, including demonstrations outside the Cuban consulate in Barcelona in opposition to the repression on the island.
