The supermarket chain Publix has removed the limit of 10 items in its express lanes, a change that transforms the checkout experience in its nearly 1,500 locations spread across eight states in the southeastern United States.
According to a statement sent to , the decision is part of a new strategy focused on efficiency.
"To better serve our customers and enhance efficiency in the payment process, we have recently updated our express checkout process to give associates greater flexibility in managing customer flow," the chain stated.
Why did Publix make this decision?
The company explained that, instead of implementing a fixed limit on items, its focus now is to “reduce waiting times and ensure that customers are served in the most efficient way possible”.
According to Local10, the measure is being tested first in Miami before being rolled out to the rest of the chain's supermarkets.
The signs that for decades indicated “10 items or fewer” are being replaced by signals that simply say “express,” a detail that reflects the true extent of the shift in the chain's policy.
What changes for buyers?
The modification means that customers with more than 10 products will no longer be redirected to other lines when approaching an express checkout.
The self-service kiosks will remain available as an alternative for those who prefer a more streamlined and independent payment experience.
The transition is gradual: some stores have already removed the old signage, while others still retain the original signs.
Publix indicated that the implementation process will soon be completed in all its locations.

The chain has a particularly significant presence in South Florida, where a large Cuban and Hispanic community resides.
In counties like Miami-Dade, Publix competes with Hispanic-oriented supermarkets, although it remains one of the preferred options due to its level of service.
In the American Customer Satisfaction Index of 2026, Publix ranks second among the supermarket chains in the country, with a score of 84 out of 100, just behind Trader Joe's, which reaches 86 points.
