At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, closes the day this Monday, August 24, 2026, with the dollar on the rise, the euro virtually stable, and the MLC with data that should be taken with caution due to the low volume of recorded operations. The U.S. dollar confirms an upward trend that has been sustained throughout the week, while the euro has seen a decline compared to levels from seven days ago.

The U.S. dollar closes at 668 Cuban pesos (CUP) on average, with a buying rate of 665 CUP and a selling rate of 670 CUP. This represents an increase of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when the exchange rate was 665 CUP. Over the past week, the dollar has climbed 5 pesos from the 663 CUP that it was at seven days ago, marking a rise of 0.8%. On a monthly scale, the exchange rate is below the 674 CUP recorded 30 days ago, although this comparison may partly reflect methodological adjustments in the index. The highest rate in the last 30 days was precisely at that level of 674 CUP, while the lowest was at 663 CUP. The demand for dollars remains high among those looking to protect their savings from the depreciation of the peso.

The euro remains virtually stable at closing, with an average value of 753 Cuban pesos (CUP), compared to 752 CUP the day before, representing a variation of just 0.5 pesos from the previous day. However, the European currency has experienced a more significant decline on the weekly horizon: a week ago, it was trading at 760 CUP, indicating a drop of 7.5 pesos during that period. Over the last 30 days, the euro has fluctuated between a high of 790 CUP and a low of 746 CUP. It surpasses the dollar by 85 pesos, solidifying its dominant position in the informal Cuban market.

The MLC closes with an indicative average value of 457 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying rate at 411 CUP and a selling rate at 502 CUP. This figure should be taken with caution, as the digital currency shows low trading volume during this time frame. Compared to the previous day, the average value has increased by 7.5 pesos from the 449 CUP recorded yesterday, although in the last week, it has accumulated a decline of 5.5 pesos from the 462 CUP of seven days ago. Over the past 30 days, the MLC has fluctuated between a maximum of 529 CUP and a minimum of 408 CUP. With no physical existence, its use is limited to state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Exchange Rate Evolution

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 668 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 753 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 457 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 638 CUP per dollar and 745 CUP per euro, remaining far below the values that govern day-to-day transactions in the informal currency market. The gap between the official and informal rates reflects the ongoing scarcity of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros by the population, whether for emigration, importing goods, protecting savings, or making purchases in the private sector.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population. In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the Cuban informal market created through the automated analysis of thousands of currency buy-and-sell postings in Telegram and Facebook groups. The calculation discards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
