A worker at the Hospital General Docente Doctor Ernesto Guevara de la Serna parking facility in Las Tunas died under circumstances that remain officially unexplained following a robbery that occurred early Monday morning.
An informative note from Periódico 26, published this Wednesday, reported that the events occurred between 2:00 and 2:30 in the early hours of Monday in the parking area of the main hospital in the province. This area was leased to a third party and was not managed directly by the hospital.
Unofficial sources cited by El Vigía de Cuba identified the deceased victim as Rafael Jiner Guerra, 64 years old, with approximately 34 years of service at that institution. The second guard, identified only as Jorge, survived and was recovering.
One aspect of the case that remains unclear is that, although sources cited by the official media claim that no signs of physical violence were detected, one of the workers died, and the cause of death has not been reported.
Unofficial versions, collected by El Vigía de Cuba, suggest that two men arrived at the location on a red electric tricycle and may have tampered with the workers' coffee using sedative medications to facilitate the robbery. This theory has not been confirmed by any authorities and is pending toxicological and forensic results.
Regarding the theft itself, Periódico 26 refuted "the multiple versions spread on social media" and clarified that the stolen items were limited to a motorbike, a , and the cell phone of one of the workers.
The incident occurs within a trend of increasing insecurity in healthcare facilities and their surroundings throughout Cuba.
Recently, there were reports of concern in Camagüey over the increase in thefts in parking lots of electric motorcycles and bicycles, with their value in the informal market exceeding 1,700 dollars for bicycles and 2,000 dollars for motorcycles.
Also in August, there were reports of systematic thefts within hospitals in Santiago de Cuba, including over 11 phones, sheets, and fans stolen in less than two weeks.
In November 2025, two individuals stole a vehicle from the parking lot of the pediatric hospital in Matanzas in an incident that also highlighted a lack of security.
Furthermore, in December 2024, a security guard at the North Children's Hospital in Santiago was assaulted and injured under similar circumstances.
The Periódico 26 concluded its note by stating that "those responsible will face justice with all necessary procedural guarantees," but it did not clarify what killed Rafael Jiner Guerra nor when the results of the forensic investigations will be known.
