The official Periódico Invasor from Ciego de Ávila announced this Tuesday the passing of Héctor Paz Alomar, one of its founders and an emblematic figure in journalism in that province, whom it described as a “teacher of several generations of journalists”.
The provincial outlet shared the news on its official Facebook page, labeling it as "breaking news," and expressed condolences to the family and friends of the journalist. Neither the cause nor the exact date of death was publicly disclosed.
Héctor Eugenio Paz Alomar was born on June 2, 1943, in Ciego de Ávila. His connection to the press began in 1969 when he joined the Press Information Center of that city as a photographer.
In 1978, he was selected to join the founding team of Periódico Invasor, and when the weekly was launched on July 26, 1979, he officially began his career as a journalist and photo reporter at that publication.
For over four decades at Invasor, Paz Alomar held the positions of Head of the Political-Ideological Working Group and, later, Head of Information.
Academic studies about Avileño journalism describe it as one of the professionals with the most reporting experience in the province and as a "paradigm" in the history of local press.
Beyond journalism, Paz Alomar developed a role as a researcher and writer: he published at least three books dedicated to the local and regional history of Ciego de Ávila, and is listed as an author on the Cuban literary portal Cubaliteraria.
It's not the first recent loss that Periódico Invasor has suffered. In May 2025, Nora Susana López Díaz, a retired journalist from the same newspaper, passed away after being struck by a vehicle.
In September 2021, José Aurelio Paz Jiménez passed away, another journalist connected to Invasor and National Journalism Award winner.
The Invasor Newspaper, founded on July 26, 1979, is the provincial press outlet of Ciego de Ávila and operates, like all other Cuban media, under the control of the Communist Party of Cuba.
"Our deepest condolences to family and friends," the outlet expressed upon announcing the news, bidding farewell to one of the journalists who helped shape its history from the very first issue.
