The mother of the doctor murdered in Güines has died, having been seriously injured in the same attack on her daughter

Lenia Valdés Amador, mother of the doctor Yanelkys Alonso Valdés, who was murdered last Sunday in Güines, passed away this Friday after spending several days in critical condition due to the injuries she sustained in the same attack that claimed her daughter's life.

The platform of Facebook Nio Reportando un Crimen confirmed the death of the 75-year-old woman "around midnight, after several days fighting for her life," during which she had to undergo surgery following the attack due to a pneumothorax.

With her death, the crime claims a second fatal victim: a mother and daughter who passed away as a result of the same attack, five days apart.

Yanelkys Alonso Valdés, 55 years old, was a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Maternal Hospital of Güines..

The alleged aggressor was identified by Nio as Horlianys Valdés, the doctor’s ex-partner.

In the same attack, a cousin of the victim was injured while attempting to intervene to protect the women.

After the attack, the accused harmed himself; although there were initial reports of his death, it was confirmed that he survived and remained in police custody while receiving medical attention.

The Gender Observatory of Alas Tensas (OGAT) verified the murder of Yanelkys as a femicide and recorded it as case number 47 in Cuba so far in 2026.

Güines has already recorded three femicides this year: in April, Mariolis López Silio, 37 years old and a mother of four, was murdered, and in July, Yesneidy López Hernández was killed in broad daylight by her ex-partner.

The pattern repeats with a regularity that independent organizations have been documenting for years: according to OGAT, 83.3% of feminicides in Cuba are perpetrated by partners or ex-partners, 64.6% are committed with a knife, and 62.5% occur within the victim's own home.

The total accumulated from 2019 to July 2026 amounts to 359 verified cases, a figure that the organization itself considers an underreporting, due to the lack of systematic and accessible official data.

The Cuban regime does not have a comprehensive law against gender violence, and the 2022 Penal Code does not classify femicide as an independent crime, but only as an aggravating factor of homicide.

The National Assembly rejected an amendment in 2022 to incorporate it as an independent criminal figure, an omission that human rights organizations denounce as a sign of the structural impunity surrounding these crimes.
