The Cuban Luis Raúl Gómez, nicknamed "Iron Tiger," suffered a defeat by unanimous decision against the American Dedrek Sanders in the main event of LFA 240, held on Friday at the F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The three judges submitted identical scorecards of 30-27 in favor of Sanders, who dominated the center of the octagon throughout all three rounds and systematically neutralized the offensive play of the Cuban fighter.
The defeat dampens the momentum of a comeback that had generated high hopes in the mixed martial arts circuit.
Gómez had been inactive since May 2022, when he was finished by Colombian Javier Reyes at Combate Global, who would later join the UFC roster.
His return to competition in 2026 started strong: in February, he defeated Kohl Laren by stoppage at LFA 227, and in June, he triumphed over Chris Guariglia to capture the Dean Serious lightweight championship.
Two consecutive victories by knockout positioned him as the headliner at LFA 240 with a record of 11-6, fueling the expectation that a strong performance could bring him closer to an opportunity in the UFC.
Sanders, with previous experience in the Professional Fighters League (PFL), had other plans.
The American, originally from Nashville and ranked among the top 20 lightweight fighters in North America according to Tapology, arrived at the fight as the betting favorite and lived up to expectations by controlling the pace and landing effective counters throughout the match.
The commentators of the broadcast accurately described the American's performance: "This is what Sanders does, he counterattacks... That punch from Sanders was devastating. Gómez is in trouble... He’s recovering, but Dedrek Sanders' onslaught continues."
With the result, Gómez falls to a record of 11-7, while Sanders rises to 12-5.
The LFA is regarded as one of the main stepping stones to the UFC in the United States, so the setback delays the Cuban's aspirations to make the leap to the world's leading organization in mixed martial arts.
The defeat, however, does not erase what has been demonstrated since the return: Gómez proved that he has what it takes to compete at this level, and the next step will precisely be the response he gives following this setback.
