The Kentucky State Police are looking for Luis Ángel González Pérez, 34 years old and a resident of Louisville, following a fatal accident that occurred on August 15 on Interstate 65, in Bullitt County, from which the suspect fled before officers arrived.
According to the report from the local station WAVE3, González Pérez was operating a tow truck that was attached to a semi-trailer cabin parked on the shoulder of I-65, near mile marker 112, south of Shepherdsville.
As the crane was facing south to make the connection, the driver attempted to execute a U-turn across the three northbound lanes of the highway.
During that maneuver, the crane was struck by a 2007 Ford Focus driven by Shawn Franklin, a 43-year-old resident of North Carolina.
Franklin sustained severe injuries and was urgently transferred to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
González Pérez emerged unharmed from the collision, but left the scene before state police officers could arrive.
Both the State Police and other local law enforcement agencies are actively searching for him, and the charges against him are pending and will be processed through the Bullitt County Prosecutor's Office.
According to a close source that contacted the channel of Facebook "Nio reporting a crime," González Pérez is originally from Matanzas, a father of two daughters, and is said to have previously lived on the La Ganadera farm.
The same source indicated that in Cuba he worked as a driver and that upon arriving in the United States, he settled in Louisville, where he worked as a welder, automotive mechanic, and tow truck operator. Those who know him describe him as a hardworking person.
"Father of two girls, a fighter, yet he made this terrible mistake of fleeing from justice at such a delicate time," the source told the community news channel Nio while reporting a crime.
That same source indicated, without official confirmation, that González Pérez may have left U.S. territory and fled to Mexico, where he also has family.
Leaving the scene of a fatal accident is a serious crime in Kentucky, and the possibility of international flight adds complexity to the case.
Louisville hosts one of the fastest-growing Cuban communities in the United States, with over 50,000 Cuban residents in the metropolitan area, making it the largest immigrant group in the city, according to estimates from the Kentucky state legislature.
As of the closing of this note, there are no confirmed reports that González Pérez has been detained, and the reconstruction of the accident and the investigation are still ongoing under the coordination of Post 4 of the State Police, based in Elizabethtown.
