opens this Tuesday, September 1, with mixed signals: the US dollar remains unchanged compared to the previous day, while the euro and the MLC have increased in price.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the day begins with the Cuban peso under pressure against the euro.

Summary of exchange rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar (USD) to CUP: 678 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro (EUR) to CUP: 768 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 467 CUP (indicative value).

The dollar remains unchanged but shows a weekly upward trend

The US dollar is currently trading at 678 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buying price of 675 CUP and a selling price of 680 CUP.

It remains unchanged compared to the previous day, reflecting a momentary stability at the beginning of September.

Exchange Rate Evolution

However, the weekly perspective tells a different story: seven days ago, the dollar was exchanged for 668 pesos, which represents an increase of 10 pesos over the last seven days, equivalent to a rise of 1.5%.

Compared to 30 days ago, when it stood at 673 CUP, the increase is 5 pesos (+0.7%), although this comparison should be taken with caution, as it may partly reflect methodological adjustments to the index.

In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 663 CUP and the current high of 678 CUP.

The euro rises and expands its lead over the dollar

The euro is the currency with the highest activity during this opening. It is quoted at 768 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying rate of 760 CUP and a selling rate of 775 CUP.

This represents an increase of three pesos compared to the previous day, when it closed at 765 CUP.

On a weekly basis, the European currency has increased by 13 pesos compared to the 755 CUP from seven days ago, marking a rise of 1.7%.

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 785 CUP, the current exchange rate is 17 pesos lower (-2.2%), although this difference may partly be due to methodological adjustments of the index.

In the last month, the euro has reached a high of 788 CUP and a low of 746 CUP.

Surpasses the dollar by 90 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

Increase of the MLC as well

The MLC is around 467 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase price of 451 CUP and a sale price of 482 CUP.

It rises three pesos compared to the previous session, when it was at 464 CUP, which is equivalent to an increase of 0.6%.

In the weekly comparison, it has slightly declined: seven days ago, it was priced at 468 CUP, one peso above the current level.

Compared to 30 days ago (474 CUP), it has accumulated a drop of 7 pesos (-1.5%).

In the last month, the MLC has recorded a maximum of 529 CUP and a minimum of 408 CUP, which demonstrates a high level of volatility.

It is important to note that this data should be taken as indicative, given the low volume of transactions that this currency usually registers during the opening hours.

Since it does not exist as circulating cash, its use is limited to state-run businesses and operations that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash foreign currencies.

The gap with the official rate, an abyss that persists

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set at 636 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.

The difference is 42 pesos in the case of the dollar and 29 pesos in the case of the euro.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency among the population.

It is worth noting that the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 615 CUP on August 2 to the current 636 CUP, which reflects a sustained depreciation of the peso in the official channel as well.
