A man was arrested on Monday after being barricaded for about three hours in an apartment in Edgewater, Miami, in an incident that prompted a SWAT team response and led to the closure of several streets in the area.
The individual was eventually transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was conscious and alert when taken to the medical center, as reported by Telemundo 51.
The operation began shortly after 7:30 a.m. at the Aria Reserve residential complex, located at 700 NE 24th Street, after a woman called the Miami Police to report that a family member had locked themselves in a room, according to the American network on the scene.
During the incident, at least one shot was heard coming from inside the house. The police clarified that the woman who made the call was not being held against her will.
The situation prompted a large deployment of SWAT teams, specialized negotiators, and units from Miami Fire Rescue. Several nearby streets were closed, and authorities urged residents to stay sheltered in their apartments.
"Currently, SWAT teams from the Miami Police and Miami Fire Rescue are on the scene, as negotiations continue," the department reported during the operation.
NBC Miami reported that there was a second person inside the apartment with the man who was barricaded. No injuries were reported for that person.
After approximately three hours of tension, the Miami Police declared the situation under control and confirmed that the scene had been cleared.
Authorities had not disclosed the man's identity or provided information on possible charges, while the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Aria Reserve, the building where the incident occurred, is a luxury residential complex consisting of two 62-story towers and approximately 782 units, developed by the Melo Group and designed by Arquitectonica. It is located facing Biscayne Bay, in one of the fastest-growing real estate areas in Miami in recent years.
