The Cuban-American Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar issued a stern warning about the ideological direction of the Democratic Party, asserting that socialism is no longer a minority trend within that political formation and that its supporters have "taken over its agenda."
Salazar based his statement on a vote held this Tuesday in the House of Representatives: 192 Democratic lawmakers, over 90% of the party's caucus, voted against a resolution condemning socialism in all its forms.
The result contrasts with the number of legislators who rejected a similar initiative in 2025.
“Last year, 98 Democrats voted against my resolution condemning the horrors of socialism. Yesterday, that number rose to 192. Over 90% of Democrats in the House. Socialists are no longer a minority within the Democratic Party. They have taken over their agenda,” the Congresswoman denounced.
"I will never stop raising my voice against this nefarious ideology, responsible for more than one hundred million deaths, which only leaves misery, hunger, and exile wherever it comes to power," he added.
The vote that supports the complaint
On Tuesday, the House approved H.Res. 1490, a resolution introduced by Republican representative Jeff Crank from Colorado.
According to the official House record, the result was 220 votes in favor and 192 against, with two legislators voting present and 18 absent.
The breakdown showed a clear partisan divide: all 211 Republicans voted in favor, while nine Democrats supported the measure and 192 opposed it.
The resolution condemns socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), and reaffirms the commitment to free and fair elections.
A strong shift concerning 2025
The contrast with the previous vote is the central argument of Salazar.
On November 21, 2025, the House approved H.Con.Res. 58, a resolution spearheaded by Salazar herself and titled “Denouncing the horrors of socialism”, with 285 votes in favor and 98 against.
On that occasion, 86 Democrats voted in favor of condemning socialism, reflecting an internal division within the party.
In less than ten months, the difference is striking: it went from 86 Democrats who supported the 2025 resolution to just nine in Tuesday's vote.
The rise of Mamdani as a symbol
Zohran Mamdani, 34-year-old democratic socialist, won the mayoralty of New York in November 2025 with 50.8% of the votes.
Her victory was celebrated by the DSA with a phrase that Salazar has quoted repeatedly: "In New York City, socialism has won."
In June 2026, candidates backed by Mamdani won three key primaries in New York, a result that Reuters described as a "political earthquake" among Democrats.
The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, then coined the term "mini Mamdanis": "They are openly in favor of socialist and Marxist ideology. This is something we have never seen before in American history."
A voice that comes from exile
Salazar, daughter of Cuban exiles and born in Little Havana in Miami, represents Florida's 27th district, which has a significant presence of both Cuban and Venezuelan communities.
In May 2026, he warned: “For years, I have warned that socialism is not just a threat abroad. It is growing here at home, openly and aggressively.”
In April, he criticized the visit of Democratic congress members to Cuba, accusing them of "echoing the dictatorship's propaganda."
In July, when four Democratic legislators met with Díaz-Canel in Havana, their rejection was equally direct.
On August 19, Salazar won her Republican primary with 81% of the votes and is seeking a fourth consecutive term in the midterm elections of November 2026, amidst a growing debate about socialism that has gained prominence in the Republican discourse ahead of the elections.
"Floridians in the South know exactly where Marxist ideology leads because many in our community fled from Cuba and Venezuela after witnessing how it destroyed freedom, opportunities, and entire nations," Salazar stated, summarizing why Cubans and Venezuelans understand better than anyone where that ideology leads.
