An elderly man was found dead this Wednesday in a public area in Santiago de Cuba, where his body remained covered with a sheet while arrangements were being made to remove it from the site.
The social communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the deceased was identified by neighbors as Calixto Lescay and that the discovery occurred on Prolongación de Calvario Street, in the Veguita de Galo neighborhood.
According to testimonies collected by Mayeta, Lescay was retired, but continued working as a messenger in order to earn additional income.
A neighbor suggested as a preliminary version that the man may have fallen in the darkness, after which he hit himself and was unable to get back up.
The images shared from the location show the covered body and later the arrival of a vehicle with a coffin for the transfer.
Mayeta also noted that the elderly man had several children who, according to neighbors, visited him sporadically, and that some relatives went to his home after learning of his passing.
The communicator also referred to rumors circulating about possible disputes regarding the property of the deceased, but cautioned that there is no verifiable information to support those claims as fact.
"Regarding possible disputes or litigation over ownership, there is no verifiable information so far, so it would be irresponsible to present it as a settled fact," he emphasized.
The case also paints a picture of the economic difficulties faced by many Cuban retirees: an elderly man who, despite receiving a pension, still went out to work to supplement his income.
However, many elderly people in Cuba suffer from that sad reality.
In August 2025, also in Santiago de Cuba, another elderly man died in the middle of Avenida Patria.
His body lay on the public street for hours while neighbors waited for the authorities to arrive and remove it.
More recently, at the beginning of 2026, an elderly man lay for hours on a street in the Sueño neighborhood, sick, disoriented, and unable to get up.
Neighbors reported that they made repeated calls seeking help and were informed by the Integrated Medical Emergency System that there were no ambulances available to respond to the emergency.
Also in April, fishermen found the retired Carlos Clavel Camejo deceased in the Ciudamar area, five days after his family reported his disappearance in Santiago de Cuba.
