A Cuban citizen was placed in preventive custody in Guyana this Thursday, accused of causing the death of two Indonesian workers in a serious traffic accident that occurred last week in Timehri.
Ramón Rodríguez, 35 years old and resident of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, appeared in court to answer to two charges of causing death by dangerous driving, according to News Source Guyana.
The Cuban worked as a driver for the company Avinash Construction Inc. and, according to the authorities, did not have a valid driver's license in Guyana.
The accident occurred on August 28, around 3:51 AM, on the public road of Timehri. According to the police investigation, Rodríguez was driving a heavy truck towards the airport when he suddenly veered into the opposite lane and collided with two private minibuses.
The vehicles were transporting a group of foreign workers from the oil sector who had just arrived at Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
The force of the impact caused several occupants to be thrown from one of the vehicles. Edy Ansyori Sukri and Ikomang Tedy Arsa Bantara Putra, both Indonesian citizens, died at the scene, while four other foreigners were injured and transported to Diamond Regional Hospital.
Breathalyzer tests conducted on the drivers involved came back negative. The police also stated that they did not locate any eyewitnesses or security cameras that recorded the accident.
Rodríguez's legal situation is marked by further irregularities: in addition to not having a valid driver's license in the country, the truck he was driving lacked insurance and a road service license, according to previous reports on the accident.
During the hearing this Thursday, he was not asked to plead guilty or not guilty, due to the nature of the charges under Guyana's legislation. The Cuban will remain in custody and is scheduled to appear again before the court on September 25.
