A Cuban resident in Houston opened her childbirth bill with so much fear that she wanted her husband to do it for her, and the result left her more relieved than expected. The young woman, known on TikTok as @yani_cabrera1991, shared the complete breakdown of the costs of her childbirth and the three days of hospitalization in a video that has garnered over 105,000 views.
"The truth is that I was very scared last night when I picked up the envelope; I didn't even want to open it. I wanted my husband to open it because I was already stressed about this. I imagined it was going to be a bill for who knows how many thousands," the young first-time mom confessed.
The surprise was a positive one. The total bill for the care of your baby amounted to $1,330.13, of which your insurance covered $997.60, leaving you with a balance of $332.53.
For her own delivery and hospitalization, the hospital billed $6,068.45. The insurance covered $4,551.34, so she will need to pay $1,517.11. In total, the family will spend around $1,849 out of pocket for the birth.
"I think the price is quite reasonable, so you know, girls," she concluded, relieved, also emphasizing that the care at the hospital was "excellent and everything was wonderful."
The young woman also clarified that she attempted to apply for Medicaid at the beginning of her pregnancy, but was not accepted. "In my case, I applied for Medicaid at the start of my pregnancy, but I was not accepted; I don't know why," she explained in the comments.
The video triggered an avalanche of responses from other Latinas sharing their own experiences, and the figures vary greatly. One user recounted that she paid just $350 for everything with her insurance; another revealed that she received a bill for $23,000.
There were also practical tips. A follower informed her that she can upload her bills to her insurance website to receive an additional discount of between $200 and $250, a detail that the protagonist was completely unaware of: "Really? I didn't know that, thank you very much," she replied.
Humor was not lacking. Someone warned her that "now you'll start receiving bills separately every week," to which the Cuban replied with laughter, "Well, then the video will have a sequel."
The issue of the cost of childbirth in the United States is one of the greatest concerns for newly arrived Cuban immigrants, and it's not surprising: an uncomplicated vaginal delivery can result in a hospital bill ranging from $11,000 to nearly $15,000. With good insurance, out-of-pocket expenses typically fall between $1,500 and $4,000; without insurance, the figures can be devastating, although many hospitals have social workers who help negotiate or waive debts.
The case of this Cuban woman is not the first to go viral. Last August, a pregnant Cuban who went to the emergency room in the U.S. received a substantial bill for less than two hours of care, a reminder that navigating the American healthcare system remains a learning experience for the Cuban community in the diaspora.
