A month after a ticket purchased at a gas station in Quincy, Illinois, matched all six numbers of the Powerball, the mystery surrounding the lucky winner has been solved.
The Illinois Lottery confirmed that the winner of the $1.04 billion jackpot has come forward to claim the prize, although they chose to keep their identity a secret.
The lottery drawing that changed this anonymous player's life took place on August 12, when a Quick Pick - a ticket with automatically generated numbers - purchased at the Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh gas station, located at 310 North 36th Street, turned out to be the only one to match the winning combination: 4, 26, 66, 67, 69, and the red Powerball 9.
Despite keeping his name private, the winner did release a statement in which he described the emotional rollercoaster he experienced upon discovering his fortune.
"At first, I didn't believe I had won, so I called a family member to confirm it. Even after claiming the prize, I'm still processing the news and experiencing the full range of emotions that come with winning a jackpot of over a billion dollars, from disbelief and shock to overwhelming euphoria," he stated.
The lucky winner also reflected on the improbability of their victory: "I never would have imagined that a $2 purchase would lead me to a jackpot of $1.04 billion. This is truly a blessing, and I am deeply grateful for this unexpected and extraordinary opportunity."
According to the state lottery, the winner spent the weeks leading up to their announcement working with legal and financial advisors to prepare for the process.
In the end, he chose to receive a one-time cash payment—about $450.5 million before taxes—rather than the annuity distributed in 30 installments over 29 years.
Illinois is one of the states that allows winners of prizes over $250,000 to request confidentiality, so the identity of this player may never be made public.
Meanwhile, the small border town with Missouri experienced weeks of intense speculation.
An employee at the Hy-Vee gas station where the ticket was sold humorously described it: "It's like a murder mystery. It's like: who did it? Who won? So all our regular customers come in saying 'not me,' 'not me.' Then, more or less, we mentally start eliminating those we haven't seen yet."
The establishment also benefited: the Illinois Lottery awarded it a bonus of $500,000 for being the point of sale for the winning ticket.
The jackpot of $1.04 billion is the second largest lottery prize in Illinois history and the eighth largest in Powerball history. The total accumulated during a streak of drawings that began on May 4 and extended until the winning draw on August 12.
Harold Mays, director of the Illinois Lottery, celebrated the outcome and welcomed the winner. "A jackpot of this magnitude is an extraordinary event, and we are excited to see the second largest lottery prize ever won in Illinois being claimed officially."
The absolute record for Powerball is held by California: in November 2022, a ticket sold in that state won a jackpot of $2.04 billion, the largest in the history of the game.
