A family reported the theft of the fan that a sick child used while hospitalized at the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where a cell phone also allegedly disappeared overnight.
The case was reported this Tuesday by the communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who received the testimony from a relative of the minor hospitalized at the hospital commonly known as "La Colonia Española."
According to the report, the alleged theft occurred during the night in the Gastroenterology ward, specifically at bed number 4, while the child remained hospitalized.
The family's greatest anger is focused on the disappearance of the fan, which, as the relative explained, was used to comfort the child during his time in the room.
“They showed no consideration for a sick child,” lamented the relative in statements sent to Mayeta.
The complainant stated that he inquired with the nursing staff about what had happened and that a worker on duty responded that she bore no responsibility for the incident.
He also stated that, up until the moment he filed the complaint, the Police had not taken any action regarding what had happened.
The family also claimed to be aware of other phones that had disappeared earlier within the institution.
The relative expressed suspicion that the person who took the belongings might be someone with regular access to the hospital.
The episode would not be the first related to security issues within that same hospital. Last March, an alleged thief was arrested inside the South Children's Hospital. Witnesses stated at that time that the man had previously stolen mobile phones belonging to patients' relatives.
The background dates back to at least November 2024, when family members reported thefts from patients and their companions at that same pediatric hospital.
One of the testimonies described how a person entered a cubicle in the early morning and took a cell phone and a mother’s purse.
Insecurity is not limited to that center. In August, new testimonies raised alarms about thefts in several hospitals in Santiago de Cuba.
Among them was the case of a man who allegedly entered a maternity home armed and threatened a pregnant woman to take her belongings.
On that occasion, two thefts were also reported in less than two weeks at the so-called Centro Gallego, where, according to testimonies collected at the time, more than 10 phones, as well as sheets and fans, had disappeared.
By 2024, patients and staff had reported thefts at the Maternal Hospital Este in Santiago de Cuba, including phones and belongings of pregnant women, their companions, and personnel from the center.
