A family reported the theft of the fan that a sick child used while being hospitalized at the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, where a cell phone also reportedly went missing overnight.
The case was disclosed this Tuesday by the communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who received the testimony from a relative of the minor admitted to the healthcare center, popularly known as "La Colonia Española."
According to the report, the alleged theft occurred during the night in the Gastroenterology ward, specifically at bed number 4, while the child was still hospitalized.
The family's greatest outrage centers around the disappearance of the fan, which, as the relative explained, was used to provide relief to the child during his time in the room.
“They showed no consideration for a sick child,” lamented the relative in statements sent to Mayeta.
The complainant stated that they asked the nursing staff about what had happened and that a worker on duty replied that they had no responsibility for the incident.
He also stated that, until the moment he filed the complaint, the Police had not taken action regarding the incident.
The family also stated that they were aware of other phones that had previously gone missing within the institution.
The relative expressed suspicion that the person who took the belongings might be someone with regular access to the hospital.
The incident would not be the first related to security issues within that same hospital.
In March, an alleged thief was apprehended inside the Sur Children's Hospital.
Witnesses stated that the man had previously stolen mobile phones belonging to relatives of patients.
The history dates back to at least November 2024, when relatives reported thefts from patients and companions in that same pediatric hospital.
One of the testimonies described how a person entered a cubicle in the early morning and stole a cell phone and a mother's handbag.
The reported insecurity is not limited to that center. In August of this year, new testimonies raised concerns about thefts in several hospitals in Santiago de Cuba.
Among them was the case of a man who allegedly entered a maternity home armed and threatened a pregnant woman to steal her belongings.
On that occasion, two thefts were reported in less than two weeks at the so-called Centro Gallego, where, according to testimonies gathered at the time, more than 11 phones, as well as sheets and fans, had disappeared.
In April 2024, patients and staff reported thefts at the Maternal Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, including phones and belongings of pregnant women, companions, and center personnel.
