A report of gunfire triggered a large police operation at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Wednesday, where one person was taken into custody while authorities investigate the incident.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) reported on X that their agents responded to the airport in the afternoon after receiving reports of gunfire.
"The agents responded quickly and placed a person in custody," stated the institution, which specified that there is no active threat to the public and that the investigation is ongoing.
So far, the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the person arrested, nor have they specified what relationship they might have to the incident. They have also not provided information regarding charges.
The Miami International Airport announced on its social media that police activity forced the temporary closure of the departures level roadway and the terminal area between doors 12 and 17.
"All vehicular traffic is currently being redirected to the arrivals area," the airport noted in a notice posted on Facebook.
The airport authorities also assured that all passengers and employees are safe and stated that they are working with the MDSO to clarify what happened.
According to Local 10, the first emergency teams began to gather at the airport shortly after 4:00 p.m.
The media reported that a video sent by a viewer appeared to show a man being taken into custody by agents at the scene. Later, authorities confirmed that a person had been arrested.
Local 10 reported that no injuries had been reported and that the incident was causing traffic issues for those trying to enter or leave the airport.
The MDSO has advised travelers to allow for extra time to reach the airport and to follow the instructions of the agents and airport staff while work continues in the area.
Although these are isolated and unrelated incidents, Miami International Airport has been the scene of other episodes that have triggered extensive security operations.
In January, several areas of the South Terminal were evacuated due to a suspicious suitcase, while authorities investigated the object and temporarily restricted access to some parts of the facility.
At the beginning of September, a man was arrested at MIA after claiming that he had a bomb before boarding a flight to Cuba, which once again prompted a response from law enforcement and security measures at the airport.
