A report of gunshots triggered a police operation at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Wednesday, where one person was taken into custody as authorities investigate the incident.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) reported on X that its agents responded to the airport in the afternoon after receiving reports of gunfire.
"The agents responded quickly and placed a person in custody," the institution stated, clarifying that there is no active threat to the public and that the investigation is ongoing.
So far, the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the detained individual nor specified their connection to the incident. They have also not provided information about any charges.
The Miami International Airport announced on its social media that police activity prompted the temporary closure of the departures level roadway and the terminal area between gates 12 and 17.
"All vehicle traffic is currently being redirected to the arrivals level," stated the airport in a notice posted on Facebook.
The airport authorities also stated that all passengers and employees are safe and mentioned that they are working with the MDSO to clarify what happened.
According to Local 10, the first emergency teams began to arrive at the airport shortly after 4:00 p.m.
The media reported that a video sent by a viewer appeared to show the moment when officers took a man into custody. Subsequently, authorities confirmed that one person had been detained.
Local 10 reported that no injuries had been reported and that the incident was causing traffic problems for those trying to enter or exit the airport.
The MDSO has requested travelers to allow extra time to arrive at the airport and to follow the instructions of the agents and airport staff while work in the area continues.
The Miami International Airport has been the scene of other incidents this year that have prompted security operations.
In January, several areas of the South Terminal were evacuated due to a suspicious suitcase, as authorities investigated the object and temporarily restricted access to part of the facilities.
At the beginning of September, a man was arrested at MIA after claiming that he was carrying a bomb before boarding a flight to Cuba, which once again prompted a response from law enforcement and security measures at the airport.
