Poet Ariel Maceo Téllez: "What the Cuban regime is doing is unforgivable."

The Cuban poet and independent journalist Ariel Maceo Téllez issued a powerful public condemnation of the dictatorship in a message published on X, in which he states that the regime is beyond forgiveness.

"They are destroying the country without caring about what happens to the people. They have been in power for 67 years and still want to continue with the same system of oppression, and they are doing it in front of the eyes of the world. I repeat, there is no forgiveness for them," she emphasized.

His message comes at one of the worst moments in the history of Cuba.

Maceo, born in Havana in 1986, has a long history of persecution by the government due to his political activism. He coordinated the group Demóngeles, a platform for independent artists excluded from official cultural institutions, and had four unpublished books in Cuba because of his critical stance.

In October 2021, he was interrogated by State Security in a "safe house" in the Siboney neighborhood, where he was pressured to sign a document renouncing his literature and activism in exchange for lifting his travel ban. He refused.

An officer identified as "Juan Carlos" warned him during that interrogation: "We know what you eat, who you meet with, we know everything about your family, we follow you everywhere. Anything can happen to you on the street." Maceo publicly denounced this episode in January 2026 after recognizing the officer on Cuban state television.

In August 2023, he managed to leave Cuba for Mexico, after more than two years of being regulated. "The dictatorship didn't like that I wrote poetry," he said at the time.

From exile, he continues to publicly confront those who minimize the Cuban crisis. Last March, he questioned Spanish politician Pablo Iglesias for downplaying the situation on the Island from a five-star hotel in Old Havana, after meeting with representatives of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Maceo accused Iglesias of trying to lie about the reality of the country and speaking from a privileged position, detached from the living conditions of the majority of Cuban citizens.
